Some Freedom Mobile customers who upgraded to the iPhone 18 Pro are reporting noticeably better reception than they got on older iPhones, and they are pointing to Apple’s new C2 modem as the reason.
One Freedom customer said on Reddit they moved from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 18 Pro on Friday and measured a 10 to 12 dB improvement in RSRP, a standard measure of cellular signal strength, in fringe zones where Freedom’s signal was previously barely usable. Both phones were running iOS 27, they add, which suggests the gain comes from the modem hardware rather than software. The customer also says they skipped last year’s upgrade because they did not want a first-generation Apple modem.
A second thread shows an iPhone 18 Pro Max pulling 544 Mbps down and 38 Mbps up on Freedom’s 5G+ network in Scarborough, Ontario, even without full signal bars.
The C2 is Apple’s second in-house iPhone modem, following the C1 that debuted last year. Apple says its new C2 cellular modem brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability. Unlike C1X used only in the iPhone Air, which Apple touted as up to twice as fast as the original C1 while using less power, the company has not disclosed specific speed or efficiency gains for C2.
The posts add to early evidence that Apple’s modem hardware is now matching or beating Qualcomm’s cellular performance in real-world conditions, at least for some carriers. Commenters note that dead zones during handoffs between Freedom’s own network and its nationwide roaming partners can still persist.
