Bill Gates Warns Massive AI Catastrophe Could Lead to a Billion Deaths

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates issued a stark warning about the unchecked rapid development of artificial intelligence, stating that the technology is now potent enough to cause catastrophic harm on a global scale (via Axios).

Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Gates expressed deep concern over the dangerous potential of highly advanced AI systems ending up in the hands of bad actors. He argued that humanity has never faced a threat quite like the combination of malicious intent and cutting-edge digital intelligence.

“AI is certainly powerful enough to drive events that cause a billion deaths,” Gates warned during the interview. “There’s never been a weapon as powerful.”

Gates emphasized that relying on self-regulation from AI developers and tech giants is no longer a viable path to keep society safe. Instead, he urged lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to actively step in and establish strict legal parameters, mandatory monitoring systems, and government-enforced safeguards.

Other leaders like Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei have also publicly called for a deliberate slowdown in developing ultra-powerful AI models to give researchers time to build safety mechanisms. That stance has gained traction, drawing support from prominent executives including xAI founder Elon Musk and OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman.

Recent surveys show the public shares similar anxieties. A poll conducted by Politico revealed that roughly half of respondents across Canada, the United States, and several European nations support putting a temporary pause or slowdown on the pace of advanced AI development.

While Gates acknowledged the incredible positive transformations AI offers in healthcare and education, he maintained that the choices world leaders make right now will dictate whether the technology serves as a benefit to humanity or sets off a disaster on a scale never seen before.
