Google Photos Adds 5 New Features, but Canada Misses Some

Google Photos is adding five new tools for organizing and editing photos, including wardrobe cataloguing, vintage-style filters, new Remix templates and an upgraded markup tool.

Google detailed the updates in a September 24 blog post by Google Photos product manager Simon Li. Availability varies by feature, platform and country.

Photos in Gemini Spark can now select, brighten and share favourite family portraits from a single prompt. The feature is limited to eligible Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States.

Wardrobe automatically catalogues clothing that appears in a user’s photos and lets users virtually style and try on new looks. Google says the feature is now available on Android and iOS in the United States, India and Brazil, with no Canadian availability announced.

Moods adds nostalgic editing styles that adapt to each image, including looks inspired by 35mm film and 2000s digital cameras. The feature is available globally in Google Photos on Android.

Google is also adding 15 new Remix templates that can turn photos into red-carpet scenes, birthday cards, photo-booth shots and other themed creations. The templates are available on Android and iOS in select countries for users aged 18 and older.

The upgraded markup tool adds a redact pen for blurring sensitive information, precise thickness sliders for sketches and new fonts. Google says the feature is rolling out globally on Android.

For Canadians, availability remains mixed. Moods and the upgraded markup tool have the broadest rollout, while Photos in Gemini Spark remains U.S.-only and Wardrobe has not launched in Canada. Google has not provided a Canadian release date for the remaining limited features.

The additions follow other recent AI editing tools introduced in Google Photos as Google continues expanding the app beyond basic photo storage and organization.
