Google says existing Chromebooks will keep receiving updates through their supported lifetimes, but ChromeOS updates will end in 2034 as the company shifts toward Googlebook OS.
9to5Google reported that Google has provided more detail on what Chromebook owners can expect as Googlebook devices begin arriving, including migration plans for some newer commercial Chromebook models.
“Chromebooks you have today will continue to receive updates through their supported lifetime,” Google says on a support page. Existing Enterprise and Education management capabilities will also remain available during that period.
Google plans to bring similar management tools to Googlebook, but they will not be available at launch. The company expects those features in the second half of 2027.
Google also says “many” existing Chromebooks will be eligible to move from ChromeOS to Googlebook OS, with more details coming “soon.” The company later clarified that it was referring to newer commercial Chromebook models.
Google has also set a date for the end of regular ChromeOS support, saying updates and security patches will continue through mid-2034. The company previously referenced 2034 in a court case as the point when ChromeOS would be phased out.
“ChromeOS devices will continue to receive regular updates and security patches through mid-2034. For qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.”
That means qualifying Chromebooks bought today with support lifecycles extending beyond 2034 will have a path to Googlebook OS, although Google has not yet identified the specific models that will qualify.
Google also says it remains “committed” to web developers even as Googlebook puts more emphasis on Android apps.
Googlebook pre-orders are now open, with the first models scheduled to ship in early October. Google has not yet detailed which Chromebook models will qualify for direct migration to Googlebook OS.
