Apple Says iPhone Duo’s Crease-Hiding Layer Can Be Replaced

Three iPhones in blue, silver, and space gray with two backs and one open to show a wide home screen of apps on a gray background.

The crease-hiding layer on Apple’s foldable iPhone Duo can be removed and replaced, giving owners a way to refresh the inner display if it wears down over time (via MacRumors).

The detail came from a recent interview with content creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, in which Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering Kate Bergeron revealed that the nano-texture cover layer sitting above the foldable inner display is designed to come off.

“It’s actually replaceable, which is a really nice thing for the customer that you can peel off that layer and get a new one,” said Bergeron.

The layer’s job is to help conceal the crease in the middle of the foldable screen. Bergeron said Apple did a “significant amount of engineering work” to keep the layer in good condition for as long as possible, but customers will have the option to replace it if it wears down or the crease becomes more visible over time.

In the United States, customers with AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo can have the cover layer replaced for $19 USD, according to Apple’s website. The cost without coverage has not been disclosed, and neither has the Canadian price.

Officially, replacement will likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers. It is not yet clear whether customers can easily peel off the layer themselves, which would be an expensive experiment as the phone starts at $2,999 CAD.

The iPhone Duo goes up for pre-order on Friday, October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in Canada, and arrives in stores on Friday, October 23.
