Fizz Customers Say RCS Was Deactivated Without Warning

Some Fizz customers say the carrier has been deactivating RCS messaging on their lines without warning over the past few weeks, cutting off chat features they had been using for years.

The complaints surfaced on Reddit, which iPhone in Canada readers told us about. Multiple subscribers say they recently lost RCS access. One thread from this week has several users confirming they were cut off, while an earlier thread documents Android users losing RCS on plans without unlimited texting.

The change appears tied to Fizz’s RCS requirements. This summer the carrier updated its wording to say customers need unlimited texting included in their plan to use RCS, even though RCS messages travel over the internet, much like iMessage. For Fizz members on cheaper plans built without unlimited texting, that wording change has meant losing RCS features such as read receipts, typing indicators and high quality media sharing when texting Android users.

If your RCS features have disappeared on Fizz, the first thing to check is whether your plan includes unlimited texting, since that now appears to be the carrier’s stated requirement. You can add unlimited texts through your Fizz account settings, and Google’s Messages app will show whether RCS chat features have reconnected.

The timing is notable because Fizz only recently started rolling RCS out. Support was spotted in iOS 27 beta code in August, and the carrier began rolling out Wi-Fi Calling around the same time. Rival flanker brand Fido has also had RCS troubles on iPhones this summer.

For now, affected customers are waiting for an explanation. Whether Fizz restores RCS for plans without unlimited texting or holds the new requirement will be worth watching in the coming weeks.

iPhone in Canada reached out to Fizz for comment on Wednesday and had not heard back at press time. We will update this story when the carrier responds.
