Tesla Debuts ‘Halloween Mode’ with 2026.38.3 Software Update

Tesla is rolling out another big software update just in time for Halloween, which aims to bring some fun for owners and their kids.
According to Tesla North, update 2026.38.3 also introduces Emergency Drive Away (U.S. only), which lets drivers shift into Drive without first unplugging from a Supercharger. Tesla’s charging division announced the feature earlier this month as a way to leave a charging stop quickly in dangerous situations.
For homeowners, the bigger addition is Powershare Home Backup. Tesla’s energy division says the feature is now available for new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles paired with a Powerwall 3, extending home backup by more than two days. Cybertruck owners can stretch backup by up to three days, effectively turning the vehicle in the driveway into a reserve battery for the house.
The catch for Canadian owners is eligibility. Powershare Home Backup is limited to new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered after October 1, 2026, and Tesla’s fine print says the feature is only available in the United States and Puerto Rico.

For Halloween, Tesla says this spooky update turns your Tesla into a haunted house on wheels, adding a ghost costume to the car’s avatar, a Trick or Treat mode that plays spooky sounds and flickers the lights when visitors approach, a new haunting light show, Halloween wraps and a lock sound. There’s also a chilling Photobooth mode, plus the ability to frighten people remotely by speaking through the Tesla app, with the car repeating your words in a voice of its own. Tesla jokes that side effects may include “neighbourhood notoriety.”
The driving visuals with Full Self-Driving on show cars on the roads in shades of green, while pedestrians are skeletons. Your car is dressed up like a ghoul. Kids are going to love this software update.
In the past, some Tesla owners would decorate and try to customize their cars for Halloween, but this update makes it dead easy to just let the car try to scare and have fun with kids when they roll by for trick or treating.

According to 2026.38.3 release notes, it also contains important security fixes and improvements.
The release follows version 2026.38, which brought updated visuals to legacy Model 3 and Model Y. Like earlier Tesla software updates, including the summer release that brought FSD 14 Lite to Canada, it arrives over the air, so eligible cars can pick up the new features without a visit to a service centre.
It remains to be seen how many of these features will make their way to older Tesla vehicles powered by Intel chips for their infotainment centre.
