iPhone Duo 2 Could Bring Face ID Under the Display

Apple’s first foldable iPhone hasn’t even reached stores, but the company is reportedly exploring a major upgrade for its successor.

According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is testing under-display Face ID in early iPhone Duo 2 prototypes, potentially addressing one of the first-generation device’s biggest compromises.

On his Power On podcast, Gurman said Apple has developed prototypes with Face ID sensors beneath the outer display. The current iPhone Duo relies on Touch ID integrated into its power button, a departure from the facial recognition technology found on Apple’s flagship iPhones.

The decision largely stemmed from the Duo’s exceptionally thin design, which made it difficult to accommodate traditional Face ID hardware. However, Apple has continued working to reduce the space required for its facial recognition components.

The iPhone 18 Pro already features an under-display infrared camera, and the company is reportedly exploring ways to conceal additional Face ID components beneath the screen. If successful, the technology could allow the iPhone Duo 2 to offer facial recognition without compromising its thin profile.

Gurman also reports that Apple employees have discussed bringing the Action button to a future Duo model, although those plans appear less certain. It’s unclear whether Apple would retain Touch ID alongside Face ID, potentially giving users different authentication options depending on whether the phone is folded or unfolded.

Importantly, these features remain in testing, and there’s no guarantee they’ll appear in the second-generation model.

The original iPhone Duo launches October 23, starting at $2,999 CAD. Strong pre-orders have already pushed Canadian delivery estimates into February 2027. Apple has also reportedly increased iPhone Duo production targets by 44% to meet demand.
