Apple May Drop the iPhone’s Action Button in 2027
According to a report by reliable Apple leaker Instant Digital, the Cupertino tech giant is planning to remove the dedicated Action Button from future iPhone models starting in the second half of 2027 (via MacRumors).
Citing supply chain rumours, the leaker claims that Apple intends to merge the functionality of the Action Button directly into the Camera Control button.
The Action Button first debuted on the iPhone 15 Pro lineup in 2023, replacing the traditional mechanical Ring/Silent switch that had been a staple of Apple smartphones since the original model in 2007. Over the years, users have come to rely on the customizable side button for a variety of quick tasks, such as turning on the flashlight, launching voice memos, toggling silent modes, or triggering complex automated shortcuts.
Under the reported redesign slated for late 2027, the standalone button located above the volume controls will disappear entirely. However, the features tied to it will not be lost. Instead, Apple plans to shift those capabilities over to the Camera Control button on the opposite side of the device.
Current leaks indicate that a standard press will continue to open the camera app, while a long-press or alternative gesture on the same surface will handle the custom tasks previously assigned to the Action Button.
While trimming down the total number of physical cutouts on the chassis gives the phone a cleaner look, it may spark debate among power users. Many iPhone owners appreciate having separate tactile points for photography and custom shortcuts.
