iPhone Jailbreakers and Unlockers Beware of Firmware 3.1

The iPhone Dev-Team has posted a brief note warning iPhone jailbreakers and unlockers to avoid updating to firmware 3.1. The concern comes as expectations grow that Apple may release the 3.1 firmware at their September 9 2009 iPod event.

If the 3.1 firmware update is released on Wednesday, jailbreakers and unlockers must avoid updating to it otherwise those iPhones will lose their ultrasn0w unlock, possibly permanently.

This warning is mostly for users that use redsn0w, as the Dev-Team has indicated that their PwnageTool will allow you to update the firmware without affecting the baseband.

But in any case, if you have a jailbroken and/or unlocked iPod Touch/iPhone, it would be wise to avoid the 3.1 firmware update until further notice.

Never jump on updates until everything is settle, unless u don't care about jailbreaking and unlocking, then go for it!

so how does one avoid it?

I hate itunes and don't trust that it won't just do whatever the hell it wants when it wants without asking me

Just don't click “update” when iTunes prompts.

I guess the rate of “new” jailbreakers increases so quickly they have to update or else people will be crying up a storm “my iPhone doesn't work anymore, wahh!” hehe

guys I heard there was a cydia app that lets you backup your jailbreaked apps so you don't have to manually re-install everything and loose all your “game records” and shit. Someone can help?

thanks

Was wondering if 3.0.1 is breakable. I've been out of the loop for a while, the last thing I heard was that the latest iTunes version was a liability to jailbroken phones and not to update. Then I read something about 3.0.1 not being supported officially. Hopefully someone can clarify this for me. Thanks

I would say he is…

I just recommend always doing a restore from brand new! Just SSH all ur information or important information and very simple and fast to get everything back onto the iPhone. Then sync with iTunes afterwards.

Which directories do you typically copy over? I'm familiar with unix, but haven't used an Apple nix based device

Why use redsn0w when PwnageTool is more reliable in matters like these? I heard before that redsn0w is sort of quicker, but who cares about that?

Uhhhhh well it depends really what u want. Pictures? SMS? Mail? Cookies? Roms? Apps? I dunno lol I just do what I think I may want. But really, I never use them after wards as I just prefer to start from scratch 🙂

I recently had problems with my unlocked phone's voicemail and texting. I called apple's tech support and to no avail nothing could be done to rectify the situation short of reseting it to factory settings. I reset the phone to factory setting by way of the phone and not itunes and when I synched with itunes it notified me that the phone would be reset but updated to the most recent software upgrade which is the 3.1. Anyone has any ideas on how I can reset back to the 3.0 software rather than the new 3.1 so I can jailbreak my phone again?
