Eric Schmidt Says Google Has Won the Mobile War with Apple

Google Chairman Eric Schmidt sat down to talk about Android, Apple and the mobile market in a Bloomberg interview. Based on the most recent market studies, Schmidt rushed to compare Android’s position to Microsoft’s expansion in desktop software back in the 1990s.

Looking at the most recent numbers, Apple has lost the mobile war against Android: Android has 72%, while Apple retains only 14% of the global mobile market — Gartner study. Furthermore, Android is activating 1.3 million Android devices per day, Eric Schmidt highlighted.

“This is a huge platform change; this is of the scale of 20 years ago — Microsoft versus Apple,” he said. “We’re winning that war pretty clearly now.”

The Chairman’s remarks reflect the search giant’s confidence, as the devices using their mobile OS attract both users and advertisers, as the move from PCs towards mobile (handheld) devices gains traction.

Google’s strategy is simple: it gives away Android to drive revenue to its hardware partners such as Samsung, but this pays itself back, as it pushes the demand for ads and other Internet-based services higher, which in turn benefits Google.

“The core strategy is to make a bigger pie,” he said. “We will end up with a not perfectly controlled and not perfectly managed bigger pie by virtue of open systems.”

Eric Schmidt was succeeded by Larry Page as Google’s CEO, and the latter was expressing his thoughts about the Apple and Google relationship in an interview yesterday with Fortune.

And the carriers subsidize 100% of the hardware cost. The choice is clear. People choose free over user experience.

Yep.

Hundreds of Android OEMs vs Apple–obviously they would sell more phones. Plus some Android phones are dumbphones in disguise.

When you give away phones for free its easy to be number one.

There is one iPhone in 3 flavors and 100s of Android phones in the market, so that explains the discrepancy.

if 52% of profit share in probably the biggest tech sector is losing then I think Apple will be ok with it.

I’ve been around long enough to see tech giants rise and fall because they refused to open their eyes to the competition and thought themselves indomitable.

Apple is one of my favorite brands, which is why it would be a shame to see them fall by the same sword.

Maybe Apple will wise up and start letting people have more control over the iPhone user experience, and stop suing people over stupid patents. I think knocking down Apple’s attitude is a good thing, they will need to fight more to keep up with the competition. 🙂
