Apple Rumoured to be Testing Innolux Touch-On-Display Technology for iPhone 5S

The China Times reports (via AppAdvice) that Apple is already testing Chimei Innolux’s touch-on-display technology, which — if the results are positive — will be used in the next-generation iPhone(?).


Turns out 2013 will be a year of change at Apple. It started with giving a trial production of the A6X chip to TSMC, and now the most recent report reiterates earlier speculation claiming Apple is in talks with Foxconn affiliate Chimei Innolux with regards to its IGZO panels.

You may recall that the in-cell display used in the iPhone 5 — combining the display and touch sensor into a single part, reducing both the weight and thickness of the display — triggered some touch sensitivity issues which makes us wonder if Apple will walk this path with the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 (whatever its name will be).

While this could be just speculation, the IGZO display technology has long been rumoured to be coming to Apple’s iDevices. Yet none none of Apple’s recent patents for touch displays mentions touch-on-display technology (or at least none of the granted patents).
