Yesterday, Amazon founder and CEO, Jeff Bezos introduced a new line of Kindles and Kindle Fire HD tablets to take on Apple and the iPad. The hour long presentation featured Bezos solo on stage, in what I thought was a pretty good keynote.
There were similarities to Apple’s keynote presentations–a clear description of new devices offered, an actual price (with same day pre-orders) and shipping dates. This is something Apple’s major competitors have failed to do. I’m looking at you Microsoft, Nokia and RIM.
The presentation also directly compared the new iPad to the Kindle Fire HD, and Amazon made it clear their implementation of MIMO technology for WiFi makes their tablets faster than everyone else’s.
Bezos confidently conveyed a message Amazon knows what they’re doing, and it reminds us of the confidence we normally only see from Apple. Om Malik compares Bezos to being the ‘next’ Steve Jobs–is that a fair comparison?
Bezos is pretty calm and makes his message clear that Amazon wants to make money by having customers spend money on content and not hardware. Their aggressive Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Fire HD pricing strategy puts pressure on everyone else, which is great for us, the consumer. Not only that, the Kindle Paperwhite’s innovative and proprietary lighting system just looks downright awesome as a new and better way to read.
There are shortfalls though. Amazon’s hardware reach is primarily limited to the USA, which shuts out the rest of the world, like Canada. This is where Amazon has fallen short, compared to the extended availability of Apple products, readily available around the globe.
