Apple’s New Intercom Feature is Supported on HomePod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and CarPlay

During its ‘Hi, Speed’ event, Apple announced a new Intercom feature alongside the HomePod Mini. It now appears as though this feature will be supported on practically all Apple products including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and even CarPlay. The notable exception, however, seems to be Mac.

The Intercom feature allows members of a family to communicate through various Apple devices when in the home using spoke messages via the HomePod. When Apple announced the feature, the full line of support was still a bit unknown. MacRumors reports that Apple has broken down which devices will support Intercom.

Apple has said the following: “A new Intercom feature offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home. One person can send an Intercom message from one ‌HomePod‌ to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone, or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated ‌HomePod‌ speaker. Intercom works with ‌iPhone‌, ‌iPad‌, Apple Watch, AirPods, and ‌CarPlay‌, so everyone in the household can get Intercom notifications and send Intercom messages from the backyard or on their way home.”

Through the latest HomePod beta software, it was discovered that when the Intercom feature is live, users can activate it by saying: “Hey Siri, Intercom”. Afterwards, they can then relay their message before choosing which device the message should be sent to. Another option appears to be “Hey Siri, Tell Everyone”. Users outside of the house can still receive Intercom messages and use their iPhone, CarPlay, or Apple Watch to respond.

Intercom messages appear as notifications on devices other than HomePod. Users can then listen to the audio message and replay by saying: “Hey Siri, reply,” to respond. It’s also possible to set when Intercom notifications are sent to their iPhone whether it is never, when they’re at home, or anytime.

Apple will also be including an accessibility option that will transcribe spoken messages on a personal device.

There’s no word on when the Intercom feature will be released. It may launch alongside the HomePod Mini which will be available on November 16th.
