Apple to Allow iOS Updates to be Installed Over 5G on iPhone 12

Apple is giving users the option to download and install iOS updates using 5G data on iPhone 12 models. The option will be included on iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.

In a new support document outlining 5G connections and options, Apple has said the future iOS updates can be installed via 5G cellular data. As reported by MacRumors, Apple notes that users must toggle on the ‘Allow More Data on 5G’ option within their setting in order to be set up to download software updates.

In order to do so, users must navigate their ‘Settings’ app and go into the ‘Cellular’ tab. From there, selecting ‘Cellular Data Options’ then ‘Data Mode’ will bring users to a menu where they can select ‘Allow More Data on 5G’. This mode not only enables users to download iOS updates but will provide “higher-quality video and FaceTime when connected”. Though, this will naturally use more cellular data. Apple does note, however, that ‘Allow More Data on 5G’ might be “the default setting with some unlimited-data plans, depending on your carrier”.

MacRumors gained access to an internal document from Verizon which confirmed that iOS updates via cellular data are only enabled over 5G and when this mode is selected. Any previous model of iPhone or iPhone 12 devices running on LTE will be unable to download any iOS updates unless connected to WiFi.
