Leaker Suggests iPhone 12 Will be The Last to Include Lightning Port Before Transitioning to Wireless
Apple will supposedly be utilizing its Lightning port instead of transitioning to USB-C for the unannounced iPhone 12. A leaker also added that this would be the last series of iPhones to do so before future models take advantage of wireless charging and the port-less Smart Connector next year.
Reported by MacRumors, a leaker by the handle Fudge aka @Choco_bit claims that Apple’s USB-C prototype for its iPhone 12 “aren’t making it to production”. Fudge continues to suggest that Apple will be transitioning to the Smart Connector for the 13 series presumably next year.
Shame the USB-c prototype iPhone 12’s arent making it to production. 1 more year of lightning 🥳😭
Oh well, at least smart connector on 13 series

While Fudge isn’t the most recognized leaker, leaked renders regarding iPhone 12’s camera array featuring the LiDAR scanner and refined notch did originate from this account. During that time, Fudge’s claims were substantiated by others in the know.
A transition to wireless charging has been a widely rumoured feature for years. Add to the fact that Apple has been rumoured to be revising its AirPower charging mat, one can see a future where the company’s flagship device supports wireless charging.
The introduction of a Smart Connector is the interesting bit. Apple’s theoretical transition to a wireless charging experience could still be implemented alongside the addition of a Smart Connector. While data transfer and charging can be completed through induction and wireless systems, Smart Connector can be a means to pair accessories and restore devices.
Fudge clarified that although the Smart Connector is likely to be included on the 2021 series of iPhone (D6x), it will not “be the intended way to charge”.
for clarification, smart connector thing on 13 series wont be the intended way to charge. Youll be expected to go wireless charging mainly. D6x series (iphone 13 series) hasnt really begun proper development yet so iphone magsafe more of a plan atm. Portless is coming either way

Of course, we won’t fully understand the scope of Apple’s plans until the company announces the new iPhone 12 this year. The probable window for the announcement should fall around September, though timelines could change given the current global situation.
