Telus and Koodo Launch Roaming on VoLTE for Travel to the U.S. [u]

Telus has announced customers roaming in the United States will now gain support for Voice over LTE, or VoLTE.

With VoLTE, customers can simultaneously use voice and data over LTE. Calls are routed over faster LTE networks instead of HSPA, resulting in better and clearer calls, which connect quicker.

The changes came into effect, today, on October 17, 2018. Telus has updated both its website and Koodo’s LTE pages to reflect the changes.

Telus:

Roaming on VoLTE

As of October 17, 2018, customers with a VoLTE enabled phone will be able to place and receive calls over the LTE network instead of the HSPA network while roaming in the U.S.

If there is no VoLTE coverage, or if customers don’t have a VoLTE enabled device, customers will continue roaming on the 4G (HSPA) network. VoLTE roaming rates will be the same as current HSPA roaming rates.

Koodo:

Roaming on VoLTE

Effective October 17, 2018, customers with VoLTE enabled phone will be able to place and receive calls over the LTE network instead of th HSPA network while roaming in the U.S. If there is no VoLTE coverage, or if customers don’t have a VoLTE enabled device, [customers] will continue roaming on the 4G (HSPA) network. VoLTE roaming rates will be at the same as current HSPA roaming rates.

Let us know if you’re looking forward to roaming on VoLTE on your next trip down to the United States. Those looking to roam while on vacation are better off picking up a local SIM card and plan to save money, unless you prefer the ‘convenience’ of carrier daily roaming plans for $8 per day for Koodo and $7 per day for Telus (updated).

Thanks Kris
