Rogers and Telus Raise Wireless Prices by $5, Following Bell’s Lead

Rogers and Telus have quietly increased prices on their wireless plans by $5 per month, following similar increases from Bell earlier this week. All three of Canada’s biggest carriers have now raised prices just ahead of Black Friday next month.

According to checks by iPhone in Canada on Friday, Rogers and Telus have increased prices on three of their four main bring your own phone plans. The changes come just eight days after our October 1 wireless plan comparison showed both carriers holding prices steady.

Here’s the updated Rogers lineup, with prices after the Auto-Pay discount:

  • $70/month (was $65) – 5G+ Lite, 60GB
  • $75/month (was $70) – 5G+ Essentials, 100GB with Canada-US usage for 24 months
  • $90/month (was $85) – 5G+ Popular, unlimited data with Canada-US-Mexico-Caribbean usage for 24 months
  • $100/month (unchanged) – 5G+ Ultimate, unlimited data with usage in 64 destinations and a five-year price guarantee

Telus has made nearly identical changes to its lineup, with prices including a $10 discount:

  • $70/month (was $65) – 5G+ Select, 60GB
  • $75/month (was $70) – 5G+ Complete, 100GB
  • $90/month (was $85) – 5G+ Complete Unlimited, unlimited data
  • $100/month (unchanged) – 5G+ Complete Unlimited Explore, unlimited data

As you can see, both carriers have increased their first three plans by $5 per month, while leaving their $100 top-tier plans unchanged. That’s another $60 per year for customers signing up at the new advertised rates. As it stands, Rogers, Telus and Bell pricing all matches right now. What are the odds?

Bell raised its BYOD prices by $5 to $10 on Tuesday, bringing its cheapest 60GB plan to $70 per month. Bell also left its $100 Global plan unchanged. Meanwhile, Bell-owned Virgin Plus dropped its $45/20GB plan this week, pushing its cheapest non-Basic data option to $50 per month.

Why are all three carriers increasing prices now? We don’t have an explanation from Rogers or Telus, but the timing looks to be par for the course. Black Friday wireless deals are expected next month, and higher regular prices can make upcoming promotions look more attractive.

These are advertised prices for new signups, so existing customers won’t necessarily see the same increases. However, it’s always worth checking your latest wireless bill for any separate rate changes.

With all three major carriers now charging $70 for their entry-level plans, Canadians looking to switch might want to wait until November to see what Black Friday brings.
