LG Panel Shipments Hint Possible Retina iPad mini Launch in October [Digitimes]

Digitimes reports LG is expected to ship 2.5 to 3 million 9.7-inch panels for the third quarter of this year according to its industry sources, which say 1-2 million of these units will be for the fifth generation iPad, while the rest dedicated to previous models.

As for the newest 9.7-inch iPad, it is expected to have the same 2048 by 1536 resolution but be thinner and lighter compared to before, due in part to having one backlight tube instead of two.

As for the iPad mini, sources say LG is reportedly making progress in manufacturing Retina display panels for the next generation version, now claiming a possible launch in October:

The sources also added that LG is reportedly making new headway in producing Retina panel technology for use in the next-generation iPad mini, and expects to ship about 2-3 million units a month in preparation for Apple’s expected October release date.

The hit-or-miss Asian publication previously claimed a hardware refreshed iPad mini would launch this fall with “an almost bezel-free look”, without a Retina display, which contradicts this latest claim. Recently, Digitimes also claimed the fifth generation iPad would be released in September with a slimmer bezel design akin to the iPad mini, along with improved battery life.

Oh, Digitimes.
