redsn0w iPhone 2G/3G Jailbreak/Unlock Tool Released by iPhone Dev Team

Yesterday was a very busy iPhone day for everyone. The iPhone 3G S was launched in Canada by Rogers and also around the world. Aside from all of these official hardware launches, we forgot to post some updates regarding the jailbreaking front.

What is jailbreaking? It essentially will install Cydia, a repository that will allow you to download 3rd party applications to enhance your iPhone. You will be able to download themes, tweaks, and other fixes that you won’t be able to do otherwise.

The iPhone Dev Team released PwnageTool 3.0 yesterday. They also released some notes, here’s what you need to know:

GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now. UltraSn0w is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be release via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 unlock works with this PwnageTool release.

– yellowsn0w carrier unlock only works for 2.2 firmware. ultrasn0w is the update coming for the 3.0 firmware.
– PwnageTool 3.0 will NOT work for iPhone 3G S
– PwnageTool 3.0 will work for iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, and iPod Touch 1st Gen

redsn0w Released AKA a More Powerful QuickPwn

Early this morning, another NEW tool was released by the iPhone Dev Team, called redsn0w. What is redsn0w all about? It’s like QuickPwn, which means it can jailbreak the iPhone 2G/3G on 3.0 firmware. Important info…

– it will jailbreak your iPhone 3G on 3.0 firmware; as for carrier unlock, wait for ultrasn0w
– it will jailbreak/unlock your iPhone 2G
– redsn0w will also jailbreak the iPod Touch (1st and 2nd gen)
– it’s available for Mac and PC immediately
– it only works for Macs running Intel processors
– does NOT work for iPhone 3G S

Phew. That was a lot of new information for us. I’m going to try to update both my iPhone 2G/3G to 3.0 firmware and jailbreak with redsn0w. I’ll post a video for everyone to see it, so wait for it!

For those who have tried redsn0w, how do you like it so far?

Apple likes to keep things simple. Let’s hope they let developers get into even more APIs for the future.

1st question: Yes…you’re with Fido/Rogers right?
redsn0w: multi-JB tool, does not require restore, just jailbreaks (and unlocks 2G)
Pwnage: lets you create custom firmware files

You guys have always been very helpful, so thanks in advance. I’m a bit confused about the current state of the unlock tools for the 3G running 3.0

1 – If “soft”unlocked, is it possible to factory restore?
2 – I’m confused by the line that says “If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use PwnageTool right now.”

I have a couple of Rogers iPhone 3Gs running 3.0, which I need to unlock for use overseas, with the intention of restoring them upon return. Is this currently possible?

Thanks again for the advice

1: Yes.
2: Yes…but right now, you will not be able to “carrier unlock” 3G on 3.0 until ultrasn0w is released. I’d stay on 2.2 with yellowsn0w for traveling in the meantime!

You can “restore” evrything after you unlock and after returning from overseas but why would you?? Just put the Rogers SIM and use it. Next time you are away, use the other SIM. Unlock means you can use any SIM card at any time.

I jailbroke it with this, tried running AptBackup, and now I keep losing App Store apps whenever I sync. Now I can’t even get the App Store apps back. I don’t know wtf’s going on with this freakin’ thing.

Thanks for the responses. Ayyywa – good point. My concern would be if I ever needed tech support (ie. my experience with network issues here at home) I’m assuming Rogers would deny support on an unlocked/jailbroken phone.

I am debating on J/B, last time for 2.21 I did it and my apps would disappear everytime I turned the iphone off completly and turned it back on, does anyone else have these issues? are they resolved for 3.0 J/B? if so im jailbreaking later today:)

The voice commands have been awesome for me, in fact one of my favorite features with the google app. I can look stuff up (as long as its not to weird) on the go and get maps with out having to text it all in.

Will Redsn0w open up bluetooth apps for the Touch 2G? I mean will I be able to tether with, say a Bluetooth GPS receiver etc.? I have already upgraded to 3.0.

redsn0w 0.8(incl. 3GS, hactivate, linux) & Ultrasn0W 0.8(incl. 3GS support)(see Cydia)
