Apple Adds Canadian Support for Siri, Both English and French [Update]
At WWDC 2012 today, as part of its iOS 6 announcement, Apple has confirmed Canadians will finally get language support for Siri. We will now get local search in Canada, as noted on stage by Scott Forstall!
…and now…in iOS 6 we’re adding English and French tuned for Canada…**crowd laughter**…EH?
When the new voice feature debuted in Canada with the iPhone 4S, it lacked support for location-based queries and directions, and some people even launched a class action lawsuit against Apple over the omission. Now that has all changed!
Update 1: Apple’s Siri website is now live and it has been confirmed to support both English and French, as per the screenshot below:
Siri will have new features for sports fans and will be able to:
Find out scores from live games and the current season’s past games, schedules, team rosters, and player stats for baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and soccer.
As for movies, Siri will be able to:
…get upcoming showtimes, look up movie facts, play trailers, and more. If you’re still undecided about which movie to see, Siri can show you ratings and reviews from Rotten Tomatoes.
And for restaurants, we will see support for OpenTable:
find restaurants by cuisine, price, location, outdoor seating, or a combination of choices.
Siri will show you photos, Yelp stars, price range, and reviews. Siri can even make a reservation for you via OpenTable.
Update 1: As per the WWDC 2012 keynote video, Scott Forstall announced language support for the following countries:
- Canada (tuned for English and French)
- Spanish (tuned for Spain/Mexico/USA)
- Italian
- Switzerland (tuned for Italy/French/Germany)
- Korean
- Mandarin (tuned Taiwan)
- Cantonese (tuned for Hong Kong)
- Mandarin (tuned for China/Cantonese)
Local search will now be available around the WORLD.
…refresh for updates, more to come

You will need iOS 6 most likely.
When does it launch?
Eh! That is great eh! So she is out of beta then eh?
is it still only on the 4S?
Yes
and iPad 3
Nope it’s for iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S and iPad 2 and 3 which is a good thing.
Does this go live today?
The thing I hate about WWDC is that it’s like… “Check out all these coooooool new features!”… Theeeeeen you wait for 3-4 months to get them 🙁
No where, in anything you’ve mentioned, does it actually say we will get local search in Canada. As far as I can tell, they’re just saying it functions in both languages.
Local search works in iOS 6 in Canada. Confirmed by our tipsters. It’s beautiful.
Can you jailbreak IOS 6?
It is about time for a functional SIRI in Canada.
Do you know when IOS 6 is launching?
Fall, probably october.
When will Siri be functional in Canada as per above???
For Quebecers like me, having to “fake” a metropolitan Paris French was annoying as hell and even made Siri uninteresting. I’m happy to see that it will be usable in a comfortable way for us and every English-speaking Canadians too.
would i have to get the new iphone 5 to get the new siri software or can
I update the system when it comes out? I’m new to the apple world,
Getting close! iOS6 is due out on Sep 19, which should enable these features!
