Skype 2.0 iPhone App Updated for 3G Calling!

Update May 30, 2010: looks like Skype has extended free Skype to Skype 3G calls till the end of 2010.

Looks like Skype has updated their iPhone app to finally allow calls over the 3G network! Currently, the only way to make 3G calling was to jailbreak your phone and install 3G Unrestrictor or VoIPover3G. The latest Skype iPhone app update brings the following new features:

– Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
– Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPod touch.
– Enhanced call quality indicator.
– Improved start-up time.
– Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

It’s too bad Skype to Skype 3G calls are only free until August 2010 though. I wonder what the charge will be after that.

How to Save Long Distance Charges and Make Unlimited Canada/USA Calls for $3/Month

Want to save from getting hosed long distance charges from the Big 3 in Canada? Just purchase a Skype subscription plan for $3/month. This lets you make unlimited calls to Canada/USA! Now that Skype works over 3G, you won’t need to jailbreak your phone to utilize this amazing plan. I use it all the time to make long distance and local calls. Why pay $0.30/minute to Rogers?! You can also add a caller ID too!

Thanks to everyone who sent this in via twitter!

I tested it out with pretty questionable 3G service today with no issue and little delay. Still wondering how the big 3 are going to deal with this and what the “charge” will be after August 2010… ?

Seeing as how you actually pay “Skype” and not your carrier it will be a decent price. Hell, they charge $3 a month unlimited CA/US. So I can't imagine it would be more than that. If it was the carrier you paid it would be $30+ a month…lol

Until I hear fido's position I won't switch. I suspect they have a harder time telling if I skyped via jb using old skype than if I use skype 2

Ridiculous. After August they're going to be charging a monthly fee for Skype to Skype calls over 3G? For what! Skype to Skype calls have always been free. I don't use Skype, but I if I was a customer I'd be pretty pissed. The only calls that are charged are when you start calling landlines or cellphones.

I wonder how they are going to try justifying charging for Skype to Skype over 3G.

I've been using Fring to connect with my Skype contacts on a non-jailbroken iPhone since February! Nice to know Skype has finally come through, though.

Thanks for breaking the news. I tried it today and it work well. I'm curious to how much data is used while using skype. I may have to increase my data plan

Maybe they'll combine an iChat fee and a voip fee? Who am I kidding…. It'll be two fees and they'll both be super expensive. Just another couple ways for the big three to stick it up the consumers ass.

I don't like the idea about a small fee after August for using over 3G. I'm keeping the pre v2.0 and using 3G unrestirctor.

I'd be curious if 3G unrestirctor works with version 2.0 as well?

I tried it and it seemed okay, maybe for calling friends or family but wouldn't want to call any businesses or customers with it. I tried calling TD telephone banking and the recorded auto attendant basically sounded like “Thank you for calling TD canada trust easyyyyyyyyyy line. Please enter yourrrrrrrr 13 digit access card number nowwwwww” with the odd word being stretched out.

I just want to make sure I understand this correctly…

Skype-toSkype calls over WiFi are still free – tried it just now.

Skype-toSkype calls over 3G will soon be a charged service, but are still free at the moment.

**this is where I need clarification**

Skype-to-any local/non-local number OVER 3G is now possible too with Skype credit/monthly plan?

I tried calling my GF (local 604) via WiFi and I was able to leave her a VM. I tried to do it via 3G (turned WiFi off) and it asked me for Skype Credit. Why does Skype only referto Skype-to-Skype calls if this is the case? Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance for helping me understand 🙂

Yes, I would like to hear some feedback on 3G Unrestrictor + Skype 2.0 before I upgrade. I'll keep my old version for now. Anyone tried? Can you restrict Skype 2.0 to WiFi only?

Kris

Exactly!

I already know many people switching to unlimited data plans and going for skype/vonage numbers as it works out cheaper than pretty much any phone carrier. As long as the quality isn't an issue it seems like a great idea.

The App has recently been updated to say it's free until the end of 2010…

Here's a thought….what if Rogers decided that they were going to block Skype 2.0 because it allows you to bypass their (Rogers) long distances rates and use the cheap Skype rates!? You would still use-up some $$ on your data plan while you're connected with Skype but not much. And Rogers would lose-out on the big long distance $$.

Can they do it legally? Probably! Or, they could add a surcharge to your data plan if you use Skype…in other words, block it until you pay to unblock it!

If they make you pay to use thier iphone app, I wouldn't doubt they'd do this to make $$$!!

Does anyone know if using 3G to make SkypeOut calls will incur an additional cost? I already have a yearly SkypeOut subscription.

I just sent them an email asking exactly that – Will most probably update here if/when I get an answer

Just updated Skype to 2.0 on my jailbroken iphone 3G, but now Skype won't run! I see the skype logo come up but it just crashes later. I suspect the latest update broke something in the jailbreak or mobile subsrate, but I can't find any reference to this problem. Is anyone else having the same problem?
