Steve Jobs: Adobe is Lazy, Google is Bullcrap, Next iPhone A+

After the announcement of the iPad, Apple held a Town Hall meeting and Steve Jobs took questions from his staff. According to some sources from Wired, Steve had some interesting things to say about Google, Adobe, and the next iPhone.

Here is what Jobs had to say about…

Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them, he says. Someone else asks something on a different topic, but there’s no getting Jobs off this rant. I want to go back to that other question first and say one more thing, he says. This don’t be evil mantra: “It’s bullshit.” Audience roars.

Adobe: They are lazy, Jobs says. They have all this potential to do interesting things but they just refuse to do it. They don’t do anything with the approaches that Apple is taking, like Carbon. Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5.

MacRumors had received reports of similar comments from Steve Jobs, but wasn’t able to corroborate it until now. They also managed to hear about the following:

– Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone that Android/Google won’t be able to keep up with
– iPad is up there with the iPhone and Mac as the most important products Jobs has been a part of
– Regarding the Lala acquisition, Apple was interested in bringing those people into the iTunes team
– Next iPhone coming is an A+ update
– New Macs for 2010 are going to take Apple to the next level
– Blu-Ray software is a mess, and Apple will wait until sales really start to take off before implementing it.

So there lies some more information about why there is still no Flash on the iPhone. The software is buggy and resource intensive. HTML5 looks to be the next wave for video on the web. What I’m looking forward to is hearing more about the next iPhone. It would be nice to have a preview of iPhone OS 4.0!

lol, I love the headline summary for this article Gary.

I really hope this rumor is real. An A+ iphone update? That would be wicked… Can you say front facing camera??
Also, I'm glad now that we can maybe put this flash/iphone thing to bed. Looks like HTML5 is the future.

…Looks like 'ol Steve has some of his fire back 🙂

Steve is not being honest here.
They don't implement flash for one reason, pure and simple – total control. They don't want you to bypass iTunes for apps and games.

Flash being buggy? Seriously, I can't recall the last time that my Windows 7 being crashed by Flash.

I can remember ever ****ing time my mac has crashed because of flash, and it makes me glad I've refused to pay for most of adobe's products. I pay for photoshop, lightroom, and that's about it.

Agree with Jobs on his points about Google (always thought that mantra was BS) and Adobe (Flash is a CPU hog).

Certainly looking forward to some new “aggressive” functionality on iPhone OS 4.0

Front facing camera with a native iChat application would be incredible. All those other “video chat phones” we've seen were total jokes. Apple will get it right–that is if they include such a feature!

I can see the point about bypassing iTunes to get free content. But, Flash is the #1 culprit for Safari crashes on OSX.

It's also known that Flash works better on a PC. Either way, Flash is resource heavy and my MacBook's fan goes hyper every time I have multiple sites with Flash running. More here by Gruber: http://daringfireball.net/2010/01/apple_adobe_f

I just installed ClicktoFlash on my Mac. It's like Adblock for FF. Let's see if there are improvements now that Flash won't load unless I allow it. 😉

Great article, very insightful..
What's ironic is that apparently Flash CS5 will have built in development tools for iphone apps. Apparently developers will be able to use Flash to program apps instead of Apples SDK… Seem's kinda backwards to me.

Of course Flash is somewhat buggy on a Mac. When 90%+ of the world runs Windows it makes sense for Adobe to concentrate on Windows development. As much as Steve thinks it may be case, I still see Flash in use for a long time. And when the other mobile OSes get Flash working and Apple is left in the cold, then Steve will change his tune.

Just my opinion of course. )

Try Aperture and Pixelmator. 😉

Somewhat buggy? Flash has always performed poorly on the Mac. They've had over a decade to improve, but STILL lag noticeably behind in performance and stability. Steve is 100% correct that Adobe is lazy. Anyone using the Creative Suite on Mac knows this from experience.

What does “an A+” update mean? Is that a technical term or is that just Jobs saying it'll be a big update?

Can't we all just get along?
I love Google, I love my iPhone and I love Adobe.
It's just Microsoft I can do without.
sigh.

Google = bullcrap >> Indeed !!!!

They think they can do anything. Funny how every powerhouse since the beginning of time has acted that way and every single one of them fell sooner or later.

The way of the Dodo it will go. This is the nature of things.

None will last as long as they want to until they not only 'do no evil' but really 'do some good'.

Anyone running CS knows that a Mac is absolute crap over-all, when it comes to performance. I have a PC with an i7 980x 6-core @ 4.5Ghz, 4 x 160GB Vertex 2 SSD’s in RAID-0, 24GB DDR3 ram, 3 x GTX 580 TRI-SLI. Try getting those specs in a Mac, LMAO!
