According to a report from TechCrunch, Apple has quietly purchased the iCloud.net domain. Apple owns about 100 domains related to iCloud and this was the last major domain that the company did not own.
The domain was originally the home of the “iCloud Social Network,” a suspicious-looking social networking platform. It is not clear how many users the social network had before Apple bought the domain and shut it down. The site’s existing data will be destroyed in March.
It is not known how much Apple paid for the domain, but I can imagine that it wasn’t too cheap. Apple has declined to comment on the report.
TechCrunch reports that the purchase by Apple may have taken place because the company is reportedly working on a social networking app.
