Canadian YouTube Creators Contributed CAD $1.1 Billion to Canada’s GDP in 2021

YouTube Canada’s 2021 Impact Report has just been released, highlighting how Canadian YouTube creators earned valuable revenue streams and built successful businesses on the platform this past year.

According to the report, YouTube content creators in Canada continued to contribute to the phenomenon known as the ‘Creator Economy.’ It is estimated that YouTube’s creator ecosystem directly contributed CAD $1.1 billion to Canada’s GDP in 2021. Part of this impact saw the ecosystem supporting 34,600 full-time equivalent jobs in Canada.

Every day, millions of Canadians come to YouTube to inspire and be inspired. As a result, they create content, share skills, launch businesses, find community, and ultimately positively impact the economy.

Over 90% of watch time on content produced by Canadian YouTube channels comes from outside of Canada. Whatever their passion, creators from all walks of life can share their content and find success on YouTube.

Below are some additional insights from the report:

  • $100K earners are rising on the platform: The number of YouTube channels making more than $100K CAD in revenue is up 35% year-over-year
  • YouTube is putting Canadian culture on the global stage: 78% of creative entrepreneurs agree YouTube helps them export their content to international audiences they wouldn’t otherwise have access to
  • YouTube also supports SMBs: 80% of SMBs with a YouTube channel agree the platform played a role in helping them grow their customer base by reaching new audiences
