iPhone XS Max Takes 4th Spot in DxOMark’s First-Ever Selfie Camera Rankings

In DxOMark’s first-ever rankings for smartphone selfie cameras, Apple’s flagship iPhone XS Max has taken only the 4th spot with an overall score of 82. The Google Pixel 3 and Samsung Galaxy Note9 tied for the top spot with an overall score of 92 while the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 came in at third with a total score of 84.

According to the camera experts, their new ‘Selfie test’ is based on the same protocol as their tests for rear shooters and looks to offer “neutral and reliable test data about smartphone front camera performance and image quality to consumers and other interested parties”.

In DxOMark’s initially tested 12 popular smartphones, the iPhone X came in at the 10th spot while the results of the iPhone XR selfie camera have not yet been shared.

“Apple’s flagship iPhone XS Max produces some of the best still image and video quality in bright-light conditions, but struggles more than its high-end competitors when the light gets dimmer. In our rankings, it ties at 81 points with the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus. The latter comes with pretty much identical hardware specifications to its newer cousin, the Note 9, but improved tuning on the newer model has resulted in a better performance overall. In turn, the S9 Plus scores 8 points higher than its predecessor, the Galaxy S8.”
