Ricky Gervais Roasts Apple TV+ and Tim Cook During the Golden Globes

Comedian and actor, Ricky Gervais, once again returned to host the Golden Globes award show yesterday evening. During his opening monologue, Gervais took the stage by storm as he began roasting various celebrities and topics, including Apple’s streaming service.

Apple TV+ became a focus as Gervais began discussing ‘The Morning Show’. “Apple roared into the TV game with The Morning Show,” Gervais said. “A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing.” The crowd of actors and other industry professionals began cheering and applauding. Gervais quickly finished his sentence by saying: “…Made by a company that runs sweatshops in China.”

As SFGate pointed out, Tim Cook was attending the awards in support of The Morning Show. The Apple TV+ original was nominated for three awards including Best Television Series and Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama for which both Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon received a dual nomination.

Gervais then began to direct his attention to the troupe of celebrities in front of him. He continued to say: “You say you’re woke but the companies you work for…Apple, Amazon, Disney…if ISIS started a streaming service you’d call your agent, wouldn’t you? If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a platform to make a political speech.” During all of this, the camera quickly cut to Tim Cook to capture his reaction.

Ultimately, Apple did not walk away with any awards from the show. Succession was given the award for Best Television Series, while The Crown’s Olivia Colman took the award for Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama.
