Twitter Reveals Toronto’s John Tory is ‘Most Mentioned’ Mayor in Canada

Twitter recently took a closer look at the political landscape across Canada, in relation to mayors and how they’re using the social network. The Twitter Canada team analyzed accounts for mayors in the country’s 25 largest municipalities, with data collected from February 2016 to February 2017.

The average mayor has 61,000 followers, follows 1,800 accounts, has 54,000 tweets sent and 1,900 tweets liked.

Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi has the most Twitter followers; Montreal’s Denis Coderre follows the most people (4,800), along with Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman and Kitchener mayor Berry Vrbanovic, in second and third, following 4,500 and 4,400 people, respectively.

Here’s the top 10 list of mayors with the most followers:

The earliest adopter of Twitter from the bunch was Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson, joining in September 2008.

As for the most mentioned Canadian Mayor on Twitter? That title goes to Toronto’s John Tory by “a wide margin”. Data shows over the past 12 months, Tory has 90 per cent more mentions than the mayor in second place, Calgary’s Nenshi.
