Freedom Mobile Launches LTE Wireless Service in SkyTrain Dunsmuir Tunnel

Shaw has announced with partner TransLink today the underground Dunsmuir Tunnel in Metro Vancouver now has LTE wireless service for Freedom Mobile users aboard the SkyTrain.

Freedom Mobile users now have LTE service at Waterfront, Burrard, Granville and Stadium-Chinatown stations and the tunnels which connect them.

“Underground wireless connectivity means that Freedom Mobile customers now have more opportunity to text friends and loved ones, post to Instagram or respond to emails in the tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations,” said Paul McAleese, President, Wireless, Shaw Communications, in an emailed statement to iPhone in Canada. “Our partnership with TransLink will make it possible for Freedom Mobile customers to stay connected and get even more value out of their service during their commute.”

Freedom Mobile says they are working to expand their wireless coverage along the SkyTrain, with investments coming from Shaw and at no cost to TransLink or riders.

“The tunnel between Waterfront and Stadium-Chinatown stations is one of the busiest SkyTrain sections, so we’re pleased to have partnered with Freedom Mobile to offer wireless connectivity to our mutual customers throughout their downtown ride,” says Derrick Cheung, Vice-President Strategic Sourcing and Real Estate, TransLink, in a statement. “We know that uninterrupted connectivity is important to transit users and we’re pleased that these kinds of partnerships can improve our customers’ experience at no cost to transit customers or taxpayers.”

Other Shaw services available to customers include free Shaw Go WiFi aboard SeaBus platforms and ferries, which service the North Shore.
