WinPwn 2.0 Released! Upgrade iPhone to 2.0 For Windows

Eureka! WinPwn 2.0 has been released which will allow Windows users to upgrade and unlock their first gen iPhones to firmware 2.0. Just a few days ago the Pwnage tool was released by the Dev Team, allowing Mac users to jump on the upgrade first.

As with early releases of these tools there will indeed be bugs and errors that will occur. The WinPwn team even stated on their webpage that updates will be coming soon. So beware! If you’re not an eager beaver and ready to jump right in, my word of advice is to just wait a few days for the crinkles to smooth out, read up on the upgrade, then do it yourself.

I will eventually be upgrading my first gen iPhone to 2.0, but right now my significant other is using it and she’s quite happy with 1.1.4. Of course, 2.0 is going to be great but remember the old saying, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” So with that being said I’m going to hold off upgrading to 2.0 in the meantime. I find 2.0 to be slow and buggy anyways, so that in itself is not a big enough reason to upgrade. I might upgrade for the heck of it though, just to test things out or for writing a tutorial. How do I have time to upgrade my iPhone from 1.1.4 to 2.0 when I’m too busy playing with my iPhone 3G? 😉

Features of WinPwn
* Support for both 1.1.4 and 2.0
* Custom Image Support
* Custom Payload Support
* iPhone 3G support

Here are the brief instructions so far on how to do this:
Step 1: First create a custom IPSW using the IPSW Builder.
Step 2: Click “Ipwner” and browse for the custom IPSW that you just created. This will pwn itunes and allow you to flash Custom IPSW files via DFU mode (hold the power and home button for seven seconds; when the screen turns black wait a couple seconds, then let go of the power button but keep holding down home–10 seconds later iTunes should recognize your iPhone. Just let go of home after that.)
Step 3: Once you have pwned Itunes, put your phone into DFU mode. If you don’t know how to do this click Here.
Step 4: Once you are in DFU mode Itunes will pop up and then you can hold shift and click restore and browse to your custom IPSW file.

Doesn’t make any sense? Check out this guide from ifonenation.

Remember, as with all upgrades, please research carefully prior, back up, and follow instructions at your own risk! If you’ve tested out WinPwn, be sure to let us know how it went for you!
