How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (VIDEO)!

by Gary on August 14th, 2008

*edit* Just to let everyone know, this tutorial has been outdated and needs updating. If you want to update your first gen iPhone to 2.x.x firmware, this is what you need to do:

1. Sync your iPhone. Update in iTunes to 2.2.1 firmware. You can use the latest version of iTunes.

2. Download QuickPwn (either Mac or PC) and the 3.9/4.6 bootloader files (links below).

3. Launch QuickPwn and follow the instructions.

4. Afterwards, your iPhone should be jailbroken and unlocked! I’m going to have an upcoming post on how to do this in more detail.

I remember the days of owning my first generation iPhone (my significant other uses it now). The jailbreaking/activating/unlocking game certainly was a lot of fun, but now that I have my iPhone 3G those days are over–or are they? My first gen iPhone is still on the stable 1.1.4 firmware. Since the release of 2.0 and 2.0.1 I’ve been itching to update my firmware. I know a lot of you first gen users are still on 1.1.4. I’ve also received emails asking for a guide on how to update–well your wish has now come true!

I finally took some time one night to get everything setup to prepare myself for this update. I followed the guide from iClarified carefully on how to update and jailbreak 2.0.1 using WinPwn 2.0.0.4. However, the guide forget to mention one critical step: clicking iPwner after the Custom IPSW has been created (this might not make a lot of sense now, but it will–trust me!). This resulted in me getting the “error 1600″ message in iTunes. I definitely had a OMG moment but after a quick Google search, I found the solution. So please watch my video carefully on what to do.

How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (Windows users only)

1. You will need to have iTunes 7.7.1 installed. You might also need the .NET Framework for Windows XP users.

2. Download the following files and put them into a folder on your desktop (name it winpwn):

  • WinPwn 2.0.0.4
  • 3.9 BL
  • 4.6 BL
  • latest 2.0.1 firmware (first gen iPhone)
  • Once you have these files, watch my video and it should explain the rest! I fast forwarded some of the unnecessary parts during the restore, but everything is there. The video is just under 10 minutes, although the entire process took me over an hour.

Let me know how this works out for you. After updating to 2.0.1 my first gen feels like it has “come back from the dead”…it’s alive again! Also, updating to 2.0.1 has opened my eyes again to how much we are missing out by not jailbreaking our iPhone 3G’s. Soo…expect a iPhone 3G jailbreak video coming soon in the near future!

    Side notes:
    - This should work for people on firmware 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3
    - Prior to jailbreaking I synced my first gen in iTunes–everything was backed up.
    - After the update, I synced the phone and restored from the back up. Everything was back to normal. Contacts, settings, bookmarks, etc.

Big thanks to iClarified and the WinPwn team for their hard work on this!

hi iPhone fan. I'm thinking of upgrading but I am afraid of locking or bricking my phone. What are the success rates of this upgrade? I just cannot afford a paper weight but I am tempted with the upgrade!
    • Randy

    • Aussie
Hi - followed all this for my partners 1st gen ipone - followed the merry go round and eventually found the following worked BL-39.BIN BL-46.BIN itunes setup 7.6 quickpwn-225-2 - also get the iphone firmware for 2.2.1 -make sure you completely wipe any itunes quicktime ipod software from your PC before you start Quickpwn is a great tool - gives you exact timing on holding down he keys on the iphone and went beautifully first time - yay!! don''t bother with the complicated winpwn product - dodgyware and poorly thought out...
    • Gabriel
      Hi, I'm having the 1600 error, it's because I have Itunes 8??
Do I need to change Ituns to 7.7.1?

      Saludos!!
    • Mdegu
Thanks for the tutorial. I just want to ask before I take the plunge. Do you really have to use Itunes v7.7 or can you just use any version that's newer than 7.7? Thanks
    • timr
This sucks. updated firmware to 2.2.1 from 1.1.2 (yes I am a chicken) and it was glorious, apps and new stuff but no sim recognized. I knew it wouldn't work...too easy to be true.
    • tim
Crap I updated my original 1.1.2v phone to 2.2.1 and followed the QuickPwn instructions...didn't ask for the BL-39 or -46 or to check on Cydia...everything except the phone works...restored all my prior settings loaded the apps i had stored in iTunes (they work)...but no SIM recognition...no phone

I knew it would never work...crap now what?
    • You might need to run Bootneuter on the iPhone.
    • tim
Thanks, seems to have unlocked it once I figured out how to use Cydia.
I updated with 2.2.1! Old phones aren't so bad.
    • tim
I used QuickPwn after updating my 1G from 1.1.2 to 2.2.1 everything works...except the SIM card...what now? I'm on Rogers in Canada...I knew it couldn't be that easy.
    • Minja
Hi my problem is that I have the message that informs me that my sim is locked... so can I start procedure from the middle? or can someone give me some suggestion what to do?
    • TT
"I would update to 2.2 via iTunes, then jailbreak and unlock again. Do a clean restore and use QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows to jailbreak/unlock instead of WinPwn."

Can you expand on this a bit, what do you mean by a clean restore?
    • Restore using 2.2.1, instead of clicking update.
    • NOEL
I cannot restore my phone throght itune because itune does not reconized my phone.(iphone3g)
    • TT
I followed this tutorial which worked great, but I have an odd issue.

After upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1, I restored my contacts etc. through iTunes with the backup I made before starting. I think some junk from third party apps I had installed previously were carried over. For example, I had an app that let me change the carrier name, and after the firmware upgrade that custom carrier name is still there even though the icon for that app is nowhere to be seen. I'm assuming if all the old apps were wiped completely it should say ROGERS.

Every 5 or 6 days, my phone just shuts down and will not respond to anything. After a couple of days when the battery dies, I can plug it into the computer and it will recharge and go back to normal. It's as if there is some conflict that occurs that completely locks up the phone.

My question is should I try and look through the file system and manually remove any old app left-overs I can find, or can I restore the phone again?
    • I would update to 2.2 via iTunes, then jailbreak and unlock again. Do a clean restore and use QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows to jailbreak/unlock instead of WinPwn.
    • NOEL
Hi guys, I need help with my iPhone 3G, which I got from an uncle who bought it online from China. I put an ATT sim from my regular phone into the iphone and it makes and receive call fine, but it will not connect with itune. My computer recognized it only as a removable drive, also there is no WiFi connection, when I checked network there is no option for WiFi. Another thing there are no itune or Safari icon on the phone screen. What should I do.
    • Is it a first gen iPhone? I would restore via iTunes to start from a clean slate.
    • Scott
Do i need to have the AT&T SIM in my iPhone 2G while im doing this? Cause i dont live in the US and dont have an AT&T SIM. Also, I just bought this phone and its running v1.1.4 jailbroken and activated, and i would like to know if i can use ur tutorial no matter with which software my iPhone was jailbroken?
    • You can have any SIM inside. At this point in time, what you need to do is update to 2.2 in iTunes, then jailbreak/unlock using QuickPwn 2.2. It's so easy now! Check out my video on jailbreaking 2.2.
    • riko
thanks my iphone now is peace of shit because i folowed your video tutorial
      anyway thanks and goodluck
    • Guest
This video tutorial works fine. Make sure u read and follow the instructions correctly, it only takes a couple minutes and its done.
    • riko
      ye ye u a god!!!
    • Hey everyone, the following should work for updating first gen iPhones to 2.2 firmware. Just click "update" via iTunes and once there, unlock and jailbreak using QuickPwn. Since the basebands haven't changed in 2.2 for first gens, this method should work fine. I'll be posting a video of it later. Good luck!
    • Chek
Hi, I have followed every single step of your page and video and still get the 1600 error from Itunes 8.0. I have clicked the ipwn button to pwn itunes after creating the restore file and still doesn't work. Please help !!! Should i download to itunes 7.7 and try ? I have read on other pages that they've tried downgrading and it doesn't work. Thanks for any help you can provide !
    • alex

So if i follow your video and will update it to firmware i will not lose the Unlock or?

    • Matt
Does this way of upgrading also work in the EU? since I bought my IPhone in the UK, so i'm not using an AT&T or any other type of US simcard and I'm not subscribed to any sort of Internet provider (I just use wireless internet hotspots). Will this work if I just don't check the Youtube fix box? Another question I have is if it's possible to use WinPwn 2.0.0.4 with Itunes 8 or should I find a way to downgrade it to 7.7.1?
      Cheers
      Matt
    • evil-g
dear 'iphone fan' Hello from the UK! I have watched your video a dozen times, have read the posts, (and all your helpful patient replies!) and I am now itching to upgrade my 1.1.3 1st gen phone to 2.0.1
Obviously nervous because I can't afford another if I kill this one!
Can you tell me if you have had any comments from the UK trying this?
Also, I noted yout comment re the youtube check box if with AT&T. Why is this? Our 'apple approved' provider is a company called o2 and I wondered if we should check the youtube box or not, (because I would like to keep this!)
so many questions - so little courage!
      Cheers
      Jon
    • sab
thanks for answering so quickly but yes i am sure i was in DFU mode. my screen was black and itunes also detected it in DFU mode.
    • sab
Hi, i just tried posting a comment and i don't think it worked so if I've posted it twice, sorry. i really need help. i downloaded the latest version of itunes 8 without realizing that i couldnt use it to unlock my iphone. i also upgraded it to the new software 2.2 because a friend had supposedly sent me a fix for it but it did not work. so i followed your video to help me restore it to the 2.0.1 version and it worked. i was even able to Pwn itunes. unfortunately, i kept getting the error 1604. so i tried using my friends itunes (he has the 7.7 version). i Pwned it successfully but it is still giving me an error message 1601??? can anyone help me?
    • I would make sure you're in DFU mode, which is where your iPhone looks like it's off but the computer detects it. Recovery mode is where you see the USB cable on the iPhone screen and it is this part where people run into errors. You need to make sure DFU mode is the correct mode!
    • Sab
I updated my iphone to the new software (i think it was 2.2). i thought i had the fix for it. also, i updated my itunes to the 8 version. i was not able to just update it to the 7.7 version. i did everything according to the video above (which was awesome and very easy to follow, by the way). i also tried it on my friends laptop because he has itunes 7.7. i successully Pwned itunes but it still keeps giving me an error 1601. what do i do? please help!!!

Great work iPhone Fan! Can I use these instructions to upgrade my 1.1.4 unlocked/jailebroken 1st gen iPhone to the latest FW, which I think is 2.1 or 2.2? Any thoughts on stability/utility amongst the different FW (ie. 1.1.4 vs 2.0.1 vs. 2.2)? Thanks again to any helpful people!

      Hi
I am getting an error "iTunes must check the ipod software update server to identify the device" Can you please help ?

      Shiva
    • Shiva
Never mind. I got it resolved. I just said go ahead and check for the update. and resumed the steps in the video tutorial. Thanks iPhoneFan. This is the second time i am using your video tutorial first from 1.2 to 1.1.4 and now from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1. Another comment about your tutorial. If you cut some pieces of your video because its taking too long, can you please mention how long it takes ? We are just curious not knowing if the app is responding or not.

      thanks
      shiva
    • Mary-Ellen
so I have done this numerous times, on the first gen 1.1.4 jailbreaked iphone and keep getting the error 1600 message, it all seems to go smoothly until this...is this because of itunes 8.0.1 which my itunes is running??
After all is said and done, I can reboot phone and everything is the same as before (thankfully still working with old version).
      Any suggestions or help??
      please and thanks
    • Cory
Yes you need 7.7 in order for this to work!!

I have yet to receive a reply but through trying I have found this out!

It seams that no one is replying to this forum anymore so it is up to everyone to figure things out for themselves!

Find a friend with 7.7 and you should be ok, I could not get my computers to go to 7.7 it would only want to install 8.0 or higher!

      Good luck!
    • Mariog1987
I had the error (1) when trying to upgrade, but then I realized I was using iTunes 7.6 not iTunes 7.7 once i installed the correct version I was able to upgrade to 2.0 from 1.1.4; however, once Installed 7.7 i got a stupid apple Mobile device helper error, but thats another problem.
