How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (VIDEO)!

*edit* Just to let everyone know, this tutorial has been outdated and needs updating. If you want to update your first gen iPhone to 2.x.x firmware, this is what you need to do:

1. Sync your iPhone. Update in iTunes to 2.2.1 firmware. You can use the latest version of iTunes.

2. Download QuickPwn (either Mac or PC) and the 3.9/4.6 bootloader files (links below).

3. Launch QuickPwn and follow the instructions.

4. Afterwards, your iPhone should be jailbroken and unlocked! I’m going to have an upcoming post on how to do this in more detail.

I remember the days of owning my first generation iPhone (my significant other uses it now). The jailbreaking/activating/unlocking game certainly was a lot of fun, but now that I have my iPhone 3G those days are over–or are they? My first gen iPhone is still on the stable 1.1.4 firmware. Since the release of 2.0 and 2.0.1 I’ve been itching to update my firmware. I know a lot of you first gen users are still on 1.1.4. I’ve also received emails asking for a guide on how to update–well your wish has now come true!

I finally took some time one night to get everything setup to prepare myself for this update. I followed the guide from iClarified carefully on how to update and jailbreak 2.0.1 using WinPwn 2.0.0.4. However, the guide forget to mention one critical step: clicking iPwner after the Custom IPSW has been created (this might not make a lot of sense now, but it will–trust me!). This resulted in me getting the “error 1600″ message in iTunes. I definitely had a OMG moment but after a quick Google search, I found the solution. So please watch my video carefully on what to do.

How to Update iPhone Firmware 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 via WinPwn (Windows users only)

1. You will need to have iTunes 7.7.1 installed. You might also need the .NET Framework for Windows XP users.

2. Download the following files and put them into a folder on your desktop (name it winpwn):

  • WinPwn 2.0.0.4
  • 3.9 BL
  • 4.6 BL
  • latest 2.0.1 firmware (first gen iPhone)
  • Once you have these files, watch my video and it should explain the rest! I fast forwarded some of the unnecessary parts during the restore, but everything is there. The video is just under 10 minutes, although the entire process took me over an hour.

Let me know how this works out for you. After updating to 2.0.1 my first gen feels like it has “come back from the dead”…it’s alive again! Also, updating to 2.0.1 has opened my eyes again to how much we are missing out by not jailbreaking our iPhone 3G’s. Soo…expect a iPhone 3G jailbreak video coming soon in the near future!

    Side notes:
    - This should work for people on firmware 1.1.1/1.1.2/1.1.3
    - Prior to jailbreaking I synced my first gen in iTunes–everything was backed up.
    - After the update, I synced the phone and restored from the back up. Everything was back to normal. Contacts, settings, bookmarks, etc.

Big thanks to iClarified and the WinPwn team for their hard work on this!

ruffdeezy: Yeah, for stuff like this it’s better to do it at night when you don’t have to use the iPhone!

Justin: Yes, it should work for you as well. Just sync your phone before you do it. After the update, restore from your synce and everything will be there.

eva: At the end, I “restored” from my backup to get everything back.

That’s weird. After the update iTunes doesn’t read the phone like that. It’s jailbroken so no activation via iTunes is needed. I would try a full restore to 1.1.4, then try this video guide again.

I tired it and couldn’t get it to work. Had a hard time getting it into DFU mode, despite all the descriptions on the Net. Will the iTunes message say it’s in DFU mode or recovery, because it said receovery for me and had the recovery graphic. Not sure if this was the problem. Anyway, when I tried to install the custom firmware (and even later when I tried to do a normal iTunes recover), I kept getting 160X errors. Nearly bricked my phone.

Luckily, I was able to use Ziphone to restore the phone (unlocked and jailbroken) and everything was still on it (music, photos, contacts, etc.). Thank god for Ziphone.

All in all, it took me most of the day and I’m right back where I started. I think I’ll stick with 1.1.4. :)

ziphone cant seem to find the iphone although it does appear in itunes. ive tried restoring using both the 1.1.4 and 2.0.1 custom firmwares and both give me the unknown error popup.
im not sure how to check now what firmware i was using but im positive i had 1.1.4 on it to begin with.
i did notice and maybe too late though that when i originally followed the video and shift+restored i used the original 2.0.1 ipsw file that i had downloaded not the custom one….could this be the cause of all of this and is this reversable?
or am i as they say “up shit’s creek”?

thanks for any help.. im pretty new to all this iphone firmware business…

im not sure how to check now what firmware i was using but im positive i had 1.1.4 on it to begin with.
i did notice and maybe too late though that when i originally followed the video and shift+restored i used the original 2.0.1 ipsw file that i had downloaded not the custom one….could this be the cause of all of this and is this reversable?
or am i as they say “up shit’s creek”?

thanks for any help.. im pretty new to all this iphone firmware business…

every thing went smoothly until the iphone did not recognize my sim card. – looks like it is a common problem (fido card). – I also tried w rogers sim card and it does not work either – help.

Nice job on the video clip, I updated mine and everything went smooth.
Now I prob restored the iPhone 20 times because of MAIL issues lol and I also noticed some 3rd party apps. can cause some problems. For instance, BiteSMS and if u SSH ur old saved files over the original, well the app. does not load anymore causing the iPhone to get stuck on the loading screen if u restart it. (Which u need to restore again…) I also noticed a few other problems with apps. on 2.0.0.1 but o well, google.ca is ur bestfriend for all ur answers! ;)
      Good luck eveyone!

Jack – you have to be EXTREMELY patient after you see the apple & round data loop on the screen of the iphone after you shift & click restore. It takes a good 10 minutes for that to go away, and for it to follow the “normal” screens in the video. It does work – just be confident! (remember that iPhone Fan said it took an hour or so the first time around).

It took me 40 min total. If you have any questions email me sehkie@comcast.net

Hi Guys, if you run into errors, try a combination of the following:
      - uninstall and reinstall itunes 7.7
      - uninstall and reinstall winpwn 2.0.0.4
      - double check you have the CORRECT firmware for your iphone
      - Try Googl’ing your error codes
      - try the process twice…maybe 3rd time’s a charm.

I did the update once and was successful. Be sure to follow all the steps. Good luck!

jesse: you are using a first gen iphone? Try the process again. Make sure you tick off the correct boxes in the video and have the right firmware. When you shift+click you should be choosing the custom firmware, not the apple one.

You are an absolute STAR – I am an idiot. For everyone out there who gets the apple usb sign you didn’t choose the right IPSW file. Make sure you go to C:Documents and SettingsxxyournamexxxApplication Datacmwwinpwn2.0.0.4Custom-iPhone1,1_2.0.1_5B108_Restore.ipsw once you’ve shifted and restored. Hey there,

I’m from India and one of the very few Indians to posses a first-gen iPhone and now transform it in to a second-gen thanks to your “dummies guide” to upgrade to 2.0. I guess you know how it feels to keep the first-gen and keep thinking there is a second-gen out there. I was being extremely cautious before I took the bold step last night, it was so flawless from start to end, I’m amazed beyond belief. I write my own blog (nothing compared to yours) but just the right kind for my folks back here

Once again “thank you” for this seamless upgrade tutorial, look forward to more from your stable, keep up the good work!! Geeks Rule!!

The only problem I had after upgrading to 2.0.1. was that the mail application was constantly crashing, and would not let me delete or create a new account. Found a fix and now everything works.

Are the instructions the same when using the updated WinPwn 2.5?
after reading all the comments, I’m scared my SIM card won’t work after. Is there a reason that this is happening to some people? I’m still on ziphone jailbroken/unlocked 1.1.4 now.

      Dear IPhone Fan,
Thank you so much for your video. It is so cool. I had trouble on first time like every body else. However, everything worked exactly as the video show after i reinstalled Itunes. Again thank you, IPhone Fan.

Okay did the upgrade piece of cake. I’m not technical by any means, just followed the video to a T. Thanks!!!

One question. I did loose all my old installer aps. One of those apps partitioned the memory so that you were using space for video and pictures and all apps on main memory where songs are stored.

So every time I open up an app it asks “xxx would like to use current location” Don’t Allow or OK. Is this because of an old app or something new? Any help would be appreciated.

      Great stuff! Thanks.

I successfully went from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1 following your video. I’ve since went crazy on adding apps and now the iphone is kinda wacky.

Can I go through the exact steps again to update to 2.0.1. The only thing is I’m already on 2.0.1…does that matter? Do I need to downgrade back to 1.1.4 first?

      Keep up the good work!

Do I just do exactly the same steps as above except using winpwn 2.5 generated file?
      What about the .bl files?

Aside from all that will I lose everything I uploaded such as themes, backgrounds and Apps????
Is it really worth it? Are the fixes “major”?

Man, thank you very much for the amazing guide on how to upgrade my iPhone to 2.0.1 firmware!! Your site is always helpful when it comes to upgrading or tweaking my iPhone! I finally have other languages on my phone without stupid translations that would crash on me half of the time! Whoever tries to upgrade your phone just follow the video to the letter and you will be okay! If u miss one step or screw up before you DFU your iPhone reboot your computer and start all over. I recommend watching the last part of the video couple of times so you would know what to do next. Good luck to all those who is goin to unlock their phones!

      I was successful in upgrading…twice….
Everything is fine at first, but once you start installing apps, things change. I noticed that both times. My iPhone now lags a bit after each press. Sometims when pressing in my 4-digit code, there would be no click sound…and no unlock sound. I would have to power off and power on before the sound returns. I too suspect it could be Cydia related.

so I have done this numerous times, on the first gen 1.1.4 jailbreaked iphone and keep getting the error 1600 message, it all seems to go smoothly until this…is this because of itunes 8.0.1 which my itunes is running??
After all is said and done, I can reboot phone and everything is the same as before (thankfully still working with old version).
      Any suggestions or help??
      please and thanks

Yes you need 7.7 in order for this to work!!

I have yet to receive a reply but through trying I have found this out!

It seams that no one is replying to this forum anymore so it is up to everyone to figure things out for themselves!

Find a friend with 7.7 and you should be ok, I could not get my computers to go to 7.7 it would only want to install 8.0 or higher!

      Good luck!

Never mind. I got it resolved. I just said go ahead and check for the update. and resumed the steps in the video tutorial. Thanks iPhoneFan. This is the second time i am using your video tutorial first from 1.2 to 1.1.4 and now from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1. Another comment about your tutorial. If you cut some pieces of your video because its taking too long, can you please mention how long it takes ? We are just curious not knowing if the app is responding or not.

We are just curious not knowing if the app is responding or not.

      thanks

I believe you just hold down the home key and then the top key to get it to go back to regular phone.

Great work iPhone Fan! Can I use these instructions to upgrade my 1.1.4 unlocked/jailebroken 1st gen iPhone to the latest FW, which I think is 2.1 or 2.2? Any thoughts on stability/utility amongst the different FW (ie. 1.1.4 vs 2.0.1 vs. 2.2)? Thanks again to any helpful people!

Thx for a grate video-tutorial!It helpt a lot!!!!!!!!!
Please bear with me! I’m new in this…and I have lot’s of quastions:(

Well, I manage to do it from the first try, but right in the end, iTunes frozed and the “Restore from the backup ” could’t complet.
But the iphone works normaly, the wierd thing is that I lost all the photos, videos and songs ( i have them somewhere els) but all the contacts and sms are still there, even the misst cals!?
Now the vesrion is 2.0.1(5B108)Model MA712LL and before that it was 1.0.2(1C28)Model:MA712 but I don’t know what It was before that nither how they did the jailbrake, so my quastion is can I take it higher then 2.0.1 without risking to block it?!
      Thank you for your time!

I would make sure you’re in DFU mode, which is where your iPhone looks like it’s off but the computer detects it. Recovery mode is where you see the USB cable on the iPhone screen and it is this part where people run into errors. You need to make sure DFU mode is the correct mode!

Hold down the HOME button while you plug in the USB cable into the computer with iTunes open. iTunes should detect the phone.

dear ‘iphone fan’ Hello from the UK! I have watched your video a dozen times, have read the posts, (and all your helpful patient replies!) and I am now itching to upgrade my 1.1.3 1st gen phone to 2.0.1
Obviously nervous because I can’t afford another if I kill this one!
Can you tell me if you have had any comments from the UK trying this?
Also, I noted yout comment re the youtube check box if with AT&T. Why is this? Our ‘apple approved’ provider is a company called o2 and I wondered if we should check the youtube box or not, (because I would like to keep this!)
so many questions – so little courage!
      Cheers

Does this way of upgrading also work in the EU? since I bought my IPhone in the UK, so i’m not using an AT&T or any other type of US simcard and I’m not subscribed to any sort of Internet provider (I just use wireless internet hotspots). Will this work if I just don’t check the Youtube fix box? Another question I have is if it’s possible to use WinPwn 2.0.0.4 with Itunes 8 or should I find a way to downgrade it to 7.7.1?
      Cheers

Hey everyone, the following should work for updating first gen iPhones to 2.2 firmware. Just click “update” via iTunes and once there, unlock and jailbreak using QuickPwn. Since the basebands haven’t changed in 2.2 for first gens, this method should work fine. I’ll be posting a video of it later. Good luck!

      Hi Ron,

It’s been awhile but did you ever resolve your problem. I seem to be having the same issues that you had. How did you fix it?
      Thanks

You can have any SIM inside. At this point in time, what you need to do is update to 2.2 in iTunes, then jailbreak/unlock using QuickPwn 2.2. It’s so easy now! Check out my video on jailbreaking 2.2.

Hi guys, I need help with my iPhone 3G, which I got from an uncle who bought it online from China. I put an ATT sim from my regular phone into the iphone and it makes and receive call fine, but it will not connect with itune. My computer recognized it only as a removable drive, also there is no WiFi connection, when I checked network there is no option for WiFi. Another thing there are no itune or Safari icon on the phone screen. What should I do.

I followed this tutorial which worked great, but I have an odd issue.

After upgrading from 1.1.4 to 2.0.1, I restored my contacts etc. through iTunes with the backup I made before starting. I think some junk from third party apps I had installed previously were carried over. For example, I had an app that let me change the carrier name, and after the firmware upgrade that custom carrier name is still there even though the icon for that app is nowhere to be seen. I’m assuming if all the old apps were wiped completely it should say ROGERS.

Every 5 or 6 days, my phone just shuts down and will not respond to anything. After a couple of days when the battery dies, I can plug it into the computer and it will recharge and go back to normal. It’s as if there is some conflict that occurs that completely locks up the phone.

My question is should I try and look through the file system and manually remove any old app left-overs I can find, or can I restore the phone again?

I would update to 2.2 via iTunes, then jailbreak and unlock again. Do a clean restore and use QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows to jailbreak/unlock instead of WinPwn.

Can you expand on this a bit, what do you mean by a clean restore?

Hi – followed all this for my partners 1st gen ipone – followed the merry go round and eventually found the following worked BL-39.BIN BL-46.BIN itunes setup 7.6 quickpwn-225-2 – also get the iphone firmware for 2.2.1 -make sure you completely wipe any itunes quicktime ipod software from your PC before you start Quickpwn is a great tool – gives you exact timing on holding down he keys on the iphone and went beautifully first time – yay!! don”t bother with the complicated winpwn product – dodgyware and poorly thought out…
