How To: Fix iPhone 4 FaceTime ‘Waiting For Activation’

One of the major new features in the iPhone 4 was FaceTime. FaceTime, for those not in the know, is Apple’s video calling service between iPhone 4 devices.

On launch weekend, millions of Canadians picked up an iPhone 4 and when attempting to FaceTime, the call wouldn’t connect. Jumping into the settings menu for FaceTime revealed that FaceTime was “waiting for activation”. Activation, in this case, seemed to take hours. So, how do we fix this?

How To Fix FaceTime ‘Waiting For Activation’

To fix the FaceTime activation message, follow the steps below:

1.) Turn on WiFi by going to Settings > WiFi and connect to your local WiFi network.

2.) Go to Settings > General > About and wait here (about a minute) until you receive a carrier update prompt. After the update, the carrier field should say “xxxx 7.2″, where “xxxx” is your carrier name. If the carrier says “xxx 8.0″ or later, continue to step 3.

3.) Now go to Settings > Phone. Turn off FaceTime and turn off “Show My Caller ID”. Then, turn iPhone 4 off (slide to power off method).

4.) Turn iPhone 4 back on. Go to Settings > Phone. Turn “Show My Caller ID” back on and turn FaceTime back on. Make a call to another iPhone 4.

5.) If you are running iOS 4.1 or later, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

Give the above steps a try and comment below on your success (or failures!).

I was wondering if you can get one of your “sources” to provide stock information on these iphones

  • William

    First comment! Yes.

I still have yet to get my iPhone 4. All Apple Stores and Rogers stores are out of stock. :(

  • Emachines2042

i think you were a little late. lol

  •  Xaroc

i figured all these steps when i first got the phone on friday, and got it working lol. But still a great guide non the less.
    Thanks guys ^_^

  • rayyes

A friend that owns a Fido store in Ottawa said a shipment is coming this week, friday the latest :)

  • William

    Doh!

Well I still don't have an iPhone 4 in my hands. Boo for the lack of info on restocking dates.

Btw, it is in Settings/Phone, not Settings/General/Phone..but thanks for the post

does face time waste your data allowance each ?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Starting Tuesday.

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    No

  • Don

No FaceTime is currently wifi only, so your data will not be affected.

  •  Xaroc

    Wifi Only so… no ^_~

  • Rupadhya

I know that FaceTime currently works on WIFI only. Does it use minutes if not what will happen when making calls to US

  • Jacob

What about if your cant even connect to wifi in the first place! it says its connected to the internet but won't load any pages on safari or any of the apps. I tried restoring it and forgetting all network settings aswell.

  •  Xaroc

    No. It's just like skype

  • montymon

If you phone the US and then switch to FaceTime once connected, you'll have to pay for the call, but if you go to contacts and select facetime from a contact's page, it will attempt to connect strictly using WiFi. If the person at the other end is not connected by WiFi it just won't work.

  • Jujsh

    millions? really?

  • Ellard

Step 1 and Step 2 should be ok, just wait because the carrier is updating, at the same time, configuring facetime. No need to turn off facetime and caller ID, no need to turn the phone off.

  • Danreid

    Tried all steps

    Still “Waiting for Activation” :(

With Virgin Mobile, had phone since Friday

  • JB105

    Try the following:

Plug your phone into itunes and have itunes check for OS update to 4.0.1 If there is an update, install it and retry. A friend had a problem with facetime activation and this method solved it.

  • Guest007

I am in vancouver area. I was at Bestbuy store on Friday morning around 9.30am to pickup my phone. I was no. 6 in the line and was very positive that I will get my iphone 4. I am with rogers by the way. But when store opened at 10 am they guy told me that they only have four iphones for Rogers/Fido and only one of them is 32 GB. All the five people in front of me were either with Rogers or with Fido…..I was shocked…..then I quickly ran to other rogers dealers in the area but result was same…..I was out of luck.

Ever since, I have tried calling Apple store, Rogers dealers, Best buy, future shop but everyone is out of stock and they have no information, when they are getting new stock…..it is very frustrating.

Do you have any inside information?

  • http://www.oshawapilot.ca Oshawapilot

SMS must also be active and available for Facetime to initiate. A friend who had SMS blocked on their account at the carrier level (due to unsolicited SMS's they were being asked to pay for) discovered that the block was preventing FT from activating.

Literally within seconds of the block being lifted on the carriers computers Facetime activated on both of their phones.

  • Danreid

My phone is updated to 4.0.1 and the carrier is updated to 7.2 still nothing.

The techies at Virgin Mobile will be back tomorrow morning and i'm hoping they can help me out

  • http://twitter.com/Xaroc  Xaroc

Mine was having a hard time too. I just did a complete reset all settings. After my phone reset, I did a manual restart by holding the power. Once it booted mine was fixed.

  • Danreid

I have reset many times, even restored many times. Still nothing. I'm pretty sure im a unique case :(

  • http://twitter.com/Xaroc  Xaroc

Well if resets and device restarts don't help perhaps call your carriers tech support and have them take off, then re add your mms. And perhaps trouble shoot farther. I had to have my mms added back when I transfered my 3GS to i4. Some reason it screwed up. Many report with a lack of mms support FaceTime won't work

  • http://twitter.com/MSpick Mike Spick

im also with Virgin and im having the same issue. nothing will solve it. might be something on Virgins end of things?

  • Corey

You're not a unique case. I'm with Virgin, on firmware 4.0.1 and I have the carrier update. I've reset settings and completely restored the phone. Nothing seems to fix it.

Out of curiosity, has anybody else been getting texts from 11111111111111 that say “Woops! Your message didn't go through. Visit virginmobile.ca and click Help to see if the carrier you're texting is supported. Thanks.” I have a feeling that it's related somehow.

  • Rathbone

Hey I dont have anyone to facetime with yet, however im trying to get facetime to activate. When i do steps 1 and 2, i dont get the xxxx7.2. My carrier is Bell, and the options I get are Automatic, Bell, Bell. What do I do in order to activate facetime? Leave it on automatic, or pick one of the Bell options? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Have you followed the above steps?

  • Rathbone

Yeah I have they dont seem to make a difference. I dont think step 2 is working, or I dont know what option to go with. My choices are “Automatic” which is what it was set on before, “Bell” and “Bell”

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

Sounds like you're in the “carrier” menu, which you don't need to be.

You should be in Settings > Phone

  • Danreid

I havn't received any strange text messages. I've been going back and forth between Apple and Virgin Mobile support and even they are conversing with each other about it. No solution yet, I'm pretty confident it's nothing on my end, as i've updated everything, reset everything, restored countless times, done all the tricks suggested on various message boards. Still “Waiting for Activation”

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

It doesn't require resetting anything. We have applied the above steps on
over 20 iPhone 4 units and all worked after!

  • Corey

@Ex Were any of them on Virgin Mobile? I'm curious as to whether ANYONE on Virgin has been able to place a FaceTime call.

  • Jmack

What is happening with people who have multiple SMS's to pay for because of facetime using the 44……… number to SMS?

  • http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/ Ex

    Unfortunately, no.

  • dnabyun

Here's mine… I'm from Vancouver too. Went to Wireless Wave 4:30am in the morning.. waited outside till 7:45. Got in, they were stupid. Only had 2 32 for Bell. Tried to look at the plans, they wouldn't offer me 6GB. I was so adamant that I knew Bell were offering 6GB data. They kept saying that I was wrong. Frustrated feeling that I've wasted my time in the line up and we just left. Also my brother who (was with us) was FOR SURE eligible for Fido upgrade, the guy at Wireless Wave said too bad you aren't eligible. My bro double checked twice on the website and twice over the phone. So the guy at Wireless Wave wouldn't even try to help. That made us hate Wireless Wave. We will never go there again. So we went to Simply Computing close by, there was a guy who was very kind that happened to arrive work at 8:30 where the store was opening at 9:30, he asked us what we were looking for.. we requested 2 32s and he told us not to waste our time in the lineup. So we were thankful for that. Why? We walked over to FutureShop close by and we got in the line up as we were the 4th person there. Guess what? We wanted Rogers/Fido 32GB phones, they were already taken by the first 2 customers meaning they only had 2 in stock. I was bummed. Good the FutureShop employees came out to make sure that we aren't wasting our time in the line up and went over each of us in the line up to see what we were planning to get and which provider. So the guy said we have 3 32 GB for Telus. We were skeptical and wanted to see how it goes. We were pleasantly happy! We go the package more than what we wanted and expected! Free Voice Mail, 6pm 600 shared mins, both of us getting 6 GB data, unlimited, no system access fee or activation fees, all for 65 bucks each phone plus taxes. CRAZY! We switched to Telus as Rogers were pain the butt as my wife was a long time customer and they wouldn't budge with 6GB plans as they claimed that they don't have that offering. I was just plain disappointed with Rogers. No wonder now they're paying out $500 for referrals. Looks like they lost handful of customers. Their loss

Ex, please help!!!1…..I brought my Canadian unlocked back down to Boston, and am using T-Mobile USA. Well guess what? After trying activate facetime for the past 3 days, i have incurred abput $6 in United Kingdom Text Message…and its still not activated.

Was that first batch of Canadian I4s actually coming from UK?? Maybe UK Refurbs, trying to pass onto Canadians? I mean, why does FT activation need to respond to a UK Text number? Why couldnt it have just been done through iTunes…Im feeling a little dissapointed in having spent $659 for this just to have now $6 of UK texting fees..and i wouldnt even mind so much if it actually activated FT, but its not even activating….:(

FAIL! Ive tried this several times. please help!!! (Rogers)

I spoke with a CSR at Virgin last night and they said they don't support Facetime yet. WTF? It says it's a “standard feature” on the Virgin iPhone 4 webpage. Needless to say I've sent a strongly worded email to their customer support. Anyone else get this answer from Virgin?

  • Dcrozier

same thing for me… if you find a fix let me knoe dcrozier@hotmail.com

@esteban7705 – did everything didn't work. I'm with Bell, the carried update stays on 7.0 never goes to 7.2 Please if someone finds a solution email at esteban7705@gmail.com Thank you.

  • Esteban

Finally fixed it. Didn't have MMS on my plan. Face Time Uses MMS the first time you use ti to register, Another thing that I did but don't know if have anything to do with the fix was to take the sim card out for a few seconds, that was the only way the carrier updated to 7.2 I hope this helps. Let me know.

  • Esteban

Do you have mms on your plan ? I underestand FaceTime Uses MMS the first time to register your number on the server and allow the conection with other Face Time users ! I hope this helps. contact me if you want: Esteban7705@gmail.com

MMS is not a requirement of FaceTime.

This was the only site where I have seen this information. I used itunes to update carrier settings. I did like one commenter said. I took out the sim for a few seconds while itunes did it’s thing. Now I have ‘Rogers 7.2′ as a Carrier.
I did the rest of the steps. It still says ‘waiting for activation’ I don’t have a facetime button. My wife’s iphone has one, but mine doesn’t.

My Facetime went to ‘Waiting for Activation’ again after I upgraded to 4.1. I followed the instructions here and it worked! Same thing happened for my wife’s iPhone and the same steps worked. Thanks a lot again!

By the way, for other users… you don’t need to wait for the carrier update to happen especially if you’ve been waiting for sometime. Just do steps 1, 3, and 4. Hope this helps!

Lograste solucionarlo? Estoy en las mismas!!!! =(

  • Wdok

    It doesn’t work.

  • ck8833

Works with Telus (Richmond, BC). Thanks!

  • Wdok

My iphone 4 ios is 4.02. Carrier is Bell 7.2. I tried many time using Wi-Fi connection at home, even take out the sim card, it still does not work. The message “Waiting for activation” is always there for several days. I upgraded the iOS to 4.1 a few days ago. The carrier becomes Bell 8.0. The behaviour changed a little. When I turn Facetime on, first it show me “Waiting for activation” for several hours and the message turns back and facetime turns off automatically. After that, the facetime can not be turned on anymore. There is no more message “Waiting for activation” when I turn the facetime on, and it will be turned off automatically when I just re-enter the setting menu.

I called Bell Mobile tech support yesterday that they did not fix it.

    Anyone can help?

  • Amystewart

It worked but I also had to add in my phone number to the my phone number section in Phone under settings.

Then it worked like a charm!!

  • Pjd

does not work on my new iphone4

  • Ctcruz0

When I initially recieved the carrier update prompt on my iphone, I ignored it and chose to update it later…but it never prompted me again. When I connected my iphone to my computer, the prompt came up on iTunes. Once I updated the carrier, I followed the instructions above, and now it works! Thanks for posting this article!

  • huiwen

2.) Go to Settings > General > About and wait here (about a minute) until you receive a carrier update prompt. After the update, the carrier field should say “xxxx 7.2″, where “xxxx” is your carrier name.

For this step, i did not receive a carrier update prompt…

And, i cant off my caller id D: so it doesnt work for me.

Finally, I solved this problem by calling Bell customer service to enable SMS for my phone. Hope it helps for the people who have the same problem with me.

However, not sure is there any extra charge of text messages?

  • Ommador

Didn’t help! No carriwr update. My number is inknowm. No activation neither factory unlocked, nor jailbroken.

  • Nashkevincash

Well i had the same problem from iphone 4 i got from Canada, I live in Brooklyn ny and i couldn’t get FT to work till I recalled something i had read the other day.1- I called T-moble and had them put $5 on my flex pay account and enable my phone to send and recevie texts from out of the country. 2- Go to settings/Phone and turn on facetime and press ok when it pops up on ur screen. 3-wait 7 mins then turn off ur phone. 4- turn on ur phone and go back to ft to make sure its still on and there it is, you should be able to make FT calls. Do it this way with what evre phone service u use. It will work as long as you have international texts. That is the key to everything, Apple sliped up and let me know the secert when i went to the store, I’ve done it 3 times and no problems

I have just restored my iphone as new & again the same thing is happening. I am miles away from an Apple Dealer & have spoiken to Rogers my carrier & they have no more suggestions. My iphone4 is from Canada. I am using it in Saudi Arabia with STC. My compound has all internet behind firewall. According to Apple Support, firewall can be a problem to activate facetime (register your phone with facetime server). They suggested activating it elsewhere. Once it is registered, firewall is not a problem. I tried the above instruction from my house and I now have facetime. THANK YOU.

  • Yoonhi

Forgot to mention that I also did not need carrier update nor the last step of reset all settings.

Thank you very much, it worked like a charm here in Nigeria, using **5005)7672*+234803000000# (MTN).
Few steps and the easiest, now facetime button in ON.

Hi I have a serious fix here, I was so desperate and this worked amazingly well.
Im used to using voice commands, so, after having my Facetime stripped from me from a 4.01 to a 4.02 update,
    I did this:
    1. Got into voice mode by pressing the home button for a few seconds
    2. Issued voice command to call my sister which has an Iphone 4 (same as me).
    3. Iphone did the call and then the Facetime button appeared again on all contacts!

Possibilities of not working: (You must have Facetime enabled, and it must say “waiting for activation” I believe. If it says “facetime could not be activated or something, then disable facetime and enable again (back to “waiting for activation”). This worked in Costa Rica.

Mine is an Iphone 4 bought from DU in UAE under their plan and just updated 4.3, but still there is no FACETIME showing in the settings! :( Anything that can be done?

  • KB

On the Virgin/Bell network in Canada – had same problems with a brand new iPhone 4 – could make calls but when another phone tried to call me on Facetime, not connection and in the Settings Facetime was not active. Went through entire directions as noted above and success! Thanks much.

FaceTime is blocked in UAE. That is why you are not seeing the settings there :)

    FACETIME FIX on IPHONE 4

I was facing the same problem (waiting for activation) I solve it by adding SMS center (**5005*7672*+966505032999#).
+966505032999 represent STC Saudi Arabia while other is common code. for all countries.

Tried the steps mentioned above.  no luck.  here’s my deal:  Iphone 4 on iOS 4.2.1.  was activated with AT&T until my recent move to Japan, at which point i cancelled my service with AT&T.  here im basically using it as an ipod touch with facetime capability, which is cool because all i need is a wi-fi connection.  it was working fine until for some odd reason i inadvertently turned off facetime.  when i turned it back on it said “waiting for activation”  and it’s stuck there.  fortunately i can use my MacBook Pro to do facetime with my daughter back in the states, but would love to have the convenience of the iPhone again…  any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve got a buddies phone in Iraq right now he turned airplane mode on and facetime and everything else turned off.

My question is can I get that back on… The phone wont go on any local network, so it says no service.. Is there an alternate way?  I have it jailbroken. Let me know!

Simple fix. Even the apple genius could big help me. I just added in network preferences for DNS the following numbers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 then turn on Facetime and it works like a charm. It takes up to 2-3 mins to activate but it works.

OKay guys I had the same problem on iPhone 4 FW 4.3.3.
    My solution worked for me.
Make sure you sync you iPhone before doing this as you will lose all data.
I searched for a downgrade to 4.3.2 (as i had no issues with facetime on this firmware and followed the instructions at redmondpie. Got an error 1013 but couldn’t exit recovery using tiny umbrella.
Opened iTunes and recovered and updated back to 4.3.3 facetime is back working.
Things to note are when you are changing the hosts file for the downgrade make sure you delete this change and restart iTunes before upgrading back to 4.3.3

I think first thing is to try to make a call to an iphone 4 or ipod 4gen owner. for ipod, there is a facetime icon but for iphone 4, you see facetime option onscreen just after dialing a contact. The info here helped me a lot, many thanks. Now I can make facetime call between ipod 4 and iphone 4.

  • Anastasia_tirtadjaja

It doesny work for my phone either. I hav trouble shutting off the caller id.. But mine was jailbreaked before.. Do this situatio makes any difference?

    Just reset your network settings

  • Phil

    It worked!!!! Thank you!

  • Savy_gyvta

I found another way to fix it! :)

  • Savy_gyvta

    What I did was :

    1. Turn on the Wifi connection
    2. Go to SETTINGS – PHONE – FACETIME switch it ON then OFF then ON.
    3. Take off the SIMCARD then insert it back to the iPhone
    4. Go back to SETTINGS – PHONE – FACETIME, just wait until it says “your phone number will be shared with people you call with FaceTime”. It takes quite awhile though, but it did work!

    That’s it. Hopefully helps!!

I don’t even get a carrier update prompt. I don’t really want to reset everything because they I’ll have to install everything again. Can I do this without resetting? I just want to have that app for FaceTime. I use FRING for video chatting which works great with any phone that can video chat, I just wanted to have FaceTime as well.

  • Oldroydr

I didn’t receive a carrier update prompt, and I waited for more than 5 minutes..

Well, I had tried reseting my phone before (and didn’t work), and now I tried the other steps. It still says waiting for activation BUT at least this time asked me something about my phone number… Like it had changed or something and it had to register it again. Thanks for your post anyway…

After this latest update on the AT&T network facetime stopped working which I updated Sunday, May 13th, 2012. Which was funny because the day before I used facetime for the first time. I don’t know if it was hiding the phone number or the powering down then back up but facetime activation went threw and it works now.

  • Salman117170

Thanks for this! Just helped a friend activate his iPhone 4 with this guide, only thing different was instead of calling another iPhone 4 (Step 4) he called me on my iPhone 5, worked a charm, once again thank you :)

  • Ashok

    Still showing waiting fro activation

  • Gia

Omg! This worked for me. iMessage was working but not FaceTime on my iPhone 4. Thank you so much!

  • Bilbo

Because chat-r doesn’t support short-message system which iMessage is using that to receive its activation ticket. Best solution is activation iMessage with a Rogers sim-card then put back chat-r one.
