Rogers iPhone 3G S Launch Day: Top Tips on Buying your iPhone
Today is the iPhone 3G S launch day in Canada and the USA. Rogers late last night dropped the bomb we were all waiting for–they finally released iPhone 3G S upgrade pricing (Fido too). Now, I don’t understand the rationale of keeping this information till the last minute. Is it to keep their employees and customers confused for today?
Imagine if you are a Rogers employee on the Eastcoast, only to show up to work in the morning with all this last minute info. Have fun passing it on to customers!
Anyways, I thought it would be handy to come up with some helpful tips (click here for last year’s preparation) on finding your hands on an iPhone 3G S, and some other thoughts to consider during today’s iPhone frenzy.
How to Get your Hands on the iPhone 3G S Today…
Educate yourself on Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G S upgrade policies. Some helpful posts you should read, if you haven’t already:
– Rogers/Fido Releases iPhone 3G S Upgrade Pricing–Finally!
– iPhone 3G S Contract Free Pricing: $699/$799 at Apple Retail Stores in Canada!
– The Absolutely Everything You Need To Know To Buy Or Upgrade To The Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS Post
– Don’t forget the UltraSn0w 3G unlock should be released today (QuickPwn/PwnageTool has been delayed)
– order your iPhone 3G S online and save $19 (still savings right? hehe)
– TweetDeck iPhone App (use twitter to send out tomorrow’s launch info)
– wake up early, and head to your nearest Rogers Wireless dealer and get in line.
– keep the kids home from school, so they can be your little iPhone 3G S helpers. Explain to them the definition of the word “monopoly”.
– Apple Stores open at 8am, if you haven’t made an appointment, they are probably fully booked.
– Also try Future Shop, Best Buy, Wireless Wave, and even the cellphone kiosk at Costco.
Should I Sign on for an Extra Year to Get Discount iPhone 3G S Pricing?
Well, what do you think? Is it worth it to extend your existing 3 year contract (for those who bought the 3G on July 11th last year; you are almost 1 year in) to benefit from the discount pricing? The reason this is worth pondering is because this Fall, new GSM competition will be appearing (Telus/Bell setting up GSM for 2010 Olympics?). I will be jumping on my wife’s HUP to get the iPhone 3G S on contract free pricing. I am planning my eventual move away from Rogers in the future, and will not bite on their current upgrade pricing “promo”.
With all these contract extensions for discounts, it looks like my Rogers Lifetime Contract post isn’t that far off, eh? 🙂 With each new iPhone, customers will continue to extend their contracts for discounts on hardware. Heck, forget the small talk and let’s just jump right into the lifetime contract. Rogers should give free phones for life, and tattoo your monthly plan details to your chest. Waddaya think? 😉
Did you Buy the iPhone 3G S Today? Success? Failure?
So, if you upgraded to the iPhone 3G S, let’s hear your story. Where did you buy it? What did it cost you? Funny stories?
Let’s see if I can get another one of these t-shirts from last year, but to reflect June 19, 2009. 😉 Happy iPhone 3G S hunting!

LOL @Rogers Lifetime Contract =P One of the funniest April Fools jokes!
I’ll be phoning to order a black 3G’S’ 32Gb this morning. I’m not prepared to stand in line for hours hoping they might have any of the particular model I want when it’s my turn [if they have any left at all].
My montly bill is always over a hundred bones. I’ll be gettin’ my 32gig for 299. Pretty decent of Roger dogers since I was preparred to fork out 800 this morning. I’ve got an apointment at the apple store in west Edmonton, not sure if I can get this new promotion there though. Maybe I should just order over the phone? What time is Rogers taking orders anyways?
Good luck trying to upgrade if you had an iphone less than a year. Rogers failed to update their systems this morning with the latest upgrade options (big surprise)
I didn’t go to sleep last night. Took a bunch of those wake up pills…. Coffee and beer of course. Brought a lawn chair to chill in. Got to my local Rogers store at yonge and St clair…. 5am in the morning I just chilled read the paper. But more surprisingly…. No one is here… I thought it would have lots of ppl but no one…. I’m still here and passerbys just look at me like what the he’ll does he have a chair for…. God I’m bored. And feel dumb to. Only 1 hour 30 mins left.
LMAO
faill
Fido.ca claims to be sold out of all 3GS
To the people already at the Apple store:
I’ll be heading out soon to WEM. Do they have a separate line for people with 8am appointments? How are they going to handle the stampede? 😉
Yeah, just paid a visit to my local rogers plus, no one there. Unfortunatley i believe (Although im not sure) that it only opens at 10. Anybody know of any that open at 8 in the Bloor West Area?
@iPhone Fan : If you plan to use your HUP’s wife to get a new iPhone, will you swap phone numbers or she will use your old iPhone and pay for data? Because I was planning to do the same (use my wife’s HUP) since I did the stupidest thing of accepting an HUP for a LG Neon 3 months ago. The problem is that she’ll get that LG phone with no need for data, but the guys at Fido told me that there is no way she buy an iPhone without any data plan… Getting her to accept my Neon for free was kind of easy, but getting her to accept that my phone number comes with it won’t.
Today is a big day for iPhone users! Discuss your thoughts or have any comments on the iPhone 3GS here… https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/forums/showthread.php?t=5586
Good luck guys 😛
I think I will wait until the dust settles!
I have been camped outside my local rogers dealer (a beyond wireless) and was just told as they were opening that their 3GS order is late!
I know the one at young and St clair opens at 9 but I think they only have 16 gb 3G S’s
Damn, there are two here on bloor street so I think I have pretty good chances at a 32GB
Call rogers this morning and talk to the rep, told her i want to upgrade to the new iphone, no problem upgrading ,it was 299 for a 32 gig , i got the iphone 3g july 18 2008
no problem. i will have my new baby in 5 bussiness days. The phone call lasted 40min 30 minutes waiting for a sales rep
Phoned at 0630. On hold for an hour and 15 minutes. Ordered black iPhone 3G ‘S’ 32GB and it’ll be delivered in 3-5 business days.
The CSR was confused when I requested a 3G ‘S’ and said that model didn’t show as an option… All she was seeing was an 8GB, a 16GB and a 32GB iPhone 3G, but no ‘S’ model. I explained that the 32GB had to be the ‘S’ and that that was what I wanted. LOL
Waiting 3-5 business days sounds better than sitting in a chair outside a store for hours hoping they might have the model you want… *shrug*
Just set up a reservation at the Calgary Apple Store for later today – assume the Apple Store will have adequate stock and any set-up snafus will be cleared out by then.
I called Rogers and the ignorant young chick told me my upgrade would be $470 for an upgrade to the 3GS 32MB.
I told her she was wrong. She said the computer never lies.
I called again. 10 min wait. Informed woman said it’ll be $274 for 3GS 32MB.
Ensure you get someone who knows what’s going on. 1/2 the people there just learned about the 3GS during the first 15 mins of their shift.
Good luck everyone!
My details: Never had a smartphone, extended to 3 years contract (not 1 year extension) and did not upgrade for over 24 months. $274 for 3GS 32MB.
Just got my 32 G 3GS from the Fido store in Eaton Center Toronto. I went with the no-contract price but the sale guy said that I can’t use my FidoDollars and not eligible for the 100 Fido Top up dollars unless I have a data plan in my account.
Anyone can confirm this or I’ll be calling Fido customer service to get my credit.
Just called Fido Service and its all clear. My FidoDollars is used + plus I I get the 100 bonus credit too.
So the Fido store sale guys do not know what they are talking about.
FYI. During my call with Fido Customer service, the system knows that I have an unlocked iPhone. Interesting…
Quick, put on your tinfoil hats!
Did you have an iPhone 3G from last year? I think the deal that you got depends on you already owning a 3G. The Fido reps I’ve spoken to have all said that the 100 FidoDollars bonus is only available to those who are upgrading from an iPhone 3G. I was also told that if you are using your Fido dollars towards a 3G S (whether upgrading from a 3G or not) that you MUST add a data plan to your account. Please confirm.
Did we save money from commission fees or service fees if we call Rogers rather than go to their stores?
When I upgraded over 2 years ago the Rogers store was going to charge me $30 to get them to do it.
I left and called Rogers instead to save cash.
SO EVERYONE IS AWARE. I went to purchase the Iphone 3GS this morning after seeing the offer they have for existing customers (299 if you bought it between july-sept of last year, with a bill of over 100/month). After waiting on hold for an hour at the store, the customer service person on the phone informed us that existing Rogers Customers CANNOT upgrade their phones today with rogers. The ‘information’ is not yet in the system.
Therefore, as of right now, if you are an existing Rogers Customer, you cannot upgrade to the Iphone 3GS today without paying full price.
I too went through the same ordeal last year, but the problem last year was caused by my corparate plan…que 1hr hold.
As for this year, i walked right in, dealt with the same guy as last year, and due to the fact that i have a iPhone 3G (with all the right eligibilty requirements) i had to be subjected to the same 1 hr breathholding only to be told that Rogers has no grasp of customer care ethics and that their last minute HUP amendment had yet to be “ass”imalated into their system.
Way to Rogers nice to see that your still at forefront of customer care and telecommunication in Canada…PLEASE learn from this and order online or over the phone ….it truly isn’t worth the BULL
10 minutes to 8:00, just drove by the flagship Fido, downtown Victoria there is not a soul. Downtown Rogers had 5 guys in front.
1hour 43 minutes on hold with Fido..phew. Long story short, got my 3GS 16gig for 199.00$ The shaft is that the next invoice is charged 399$ for the phone and then, the month after, you’ll receive the 200$ credit… The only thing is that you still shelled out 399$++ !! The 200$ credit stays on your account. It’s OK, but for those who love technology but care about have those extra 200 in your pants, it’s kinda shafty!
Walk into a Wirelesswave when the store opened, no line up, was the only person in the store at 9, picked up a 16 gig GS on Fido network. My base 3 year voiceplan before the ad-ons is $20.00, still only had to pay the 199 for the phone.
Hey guys if u live in Edmonton I have a hole bunch of new iPhones here in Londonderry mall at Tbooth on top of shoppers drug market. We do both Rogers and Fido
Went to Rogers Plus on Bloor St., went at 8:30, store opened at 9, First 3G S customer, had my 32GB White phone on the counter, right there. But they couldnt figure out the $299 July-Sept price so they said they would hold the phone and call me. Bummer.
Charging my 32 3GS, waiting patiently for it to fully charged to play with it. Curious, is anyone doing the full charge thing first before using the iPhone so the battery life/memory is optimal, etc.
That’s odd, when I bought my 3G, the rep told me to use it first till it was almost dead and then do a full charge for 12 hours. Is it different for the 3GS or did I get bad info?
Ordered mine on Rogers.com this morning. I only have 1 yr left on my contract and didn’t want to extend, so I bought the device only. My 2G iPhone will now be a backup or go to my Dad! I can’t wait for my new shiny 16GB White iPhone 3GS
I just had a shockingly good experience with Rogers – got the 16GB 3GS for $299, which is about what I was suspecting as I’m at about 1.5 years with a non-smartphone right now. Anyway, I asked the guy on the phone to persuade me to get it through them instead of in store, so he passed me along to a customer service agent (this all occurred within 20 minutes). The agent was wonderful, and we kind of bartered a bit and settled on getting free voicemail and caller ID for both of our lines (I’m on a combined family data plan with my fiance) for all three years of the contract – a savings of $24/a month and approx. $900 over the three years. I’m still a bit leery about what they promise you, but he gave me a confirmation number, his name and extension. Definitely worth calling as opposed to going in!
I just called fido kiosk and they said they aren’t selling non contract prices until late next week? WTF?
Called rogers this just now, 40min holding the line
Rep told me my iphone is not upgradable as of today, he will forward an upgrade request to the appropriate team and they will contact me back early next week
WTF !
ROGERS is so unorganized !!!!!
I was in Chinook mall in Calgary and bought a new Iphone. There was no line up.
Total lameness… I had an appointment at 8am at the apple store yorkdale and i got in all fine and everything (I waited early in line), but there were problems upgrading; the IMEI of the device would not register as valid for a upgrade, they tried several phones, stayed on hold with rogers for hours. The rogers reps at the store did the best they could do but as the morning continued it now seems to be a problem across canada. Unbelievable how Rogers couldn’t be prepared for this… So they turned me away iphone-less and said they’d call me back when the problems are resolved. I’m just kinda miffed that I waited so long for nothing… a waste of time that I could have spent sleeping!!!
I have been a loyal customer to rogers for over 5 years, always make my payments… now that my contract is expired (and i’m on a month to month basis), i feel like giving up on the iphone. Rogers can stick it up their ass. Is this how rogers treats its customers? We’re ready for them, but they don’t put in the effort to meet us half way… and have their stuff working. THANKS ROGERS!!!!
All I can say is that the apple staff were really cool and nice, even the rogers people… but they’re only nice bc they want mo’ money.
Oh and I found it odd how they had to open parallels on a mac, so they could run xp and access roger’s sales portal.
Just waited in line at a digital wireless store that claims to be Rogers. To find out that they charge a markup on all phones. You have to go to a reall Rogers plus store then they’ll give you the upgrade. However, I bought 2 IPhone 3G’s sept. 12/08 on a family plan, my bill is about $125 a month for both phones, I qualify for the $199 $299 offer with a year extension. For me it’s worth it.
Sorry to hear so many problems!
I just walked into Rogers and got mine. Out in 10 minutes…then again, I have special privileges and do not need contracts or anything 🙂
@X1Zero
what?! 😉 no contracts when you work for Rogers or where you just joking there?
I never joke TK!
At 9:00 am I went down to a small Rogers strip mall store in Victoria that opened at 9:30. I was the 2nd in a line of two. One guy, the only employee there, let us in at 9:15. No phones had been delivered but took a $50 deposit. Five people earlier in the week had placed deposits. The store was expecting their shipment by noon and I’m waiting for a call.
No matter how much I crave the iphone i won’t sign up for a 3 year contract at $117.45 per months ($4200/3yrs)
That won’t be a problem if your company pay for it 😉
sucks to be you ^^
Just back from Rogers “flagship” in downtown TO. System for those who purchased on 11 July of last year, is still not up and running. Sent home with no idea when the system would be up. Rogers on the ball as usual in spite of the $$$$$ spent with them every month.
Managed to get a White 32GB 3GS… I’m a new customer transferring over from Telus.
I went with a:
$20 EPP – 200 min anytime, unlimited evenings/weekends starting at 6pm
$35 IPhoneData Pack – 500MB, voice mail, unlimited texting, call display – i’m not doing any tethering and have wifi most of the time.
I figured this is a pretty good deal! Now… I’m owned by Rogers for the next 3 years of my life 😛
oh.. forgot to add. Either they forgot or maybe it’s because I’m a new customer, but I didn’t have to pay extra for the phone because of the voice plan under $30! Go me! …
Ive actually seen alot of this happening today. I think rogers ended that $50 thing.
I was at the Apple Store (Toronto Eaton’s Center) at 6:45am in line, I was 10th in line, there was a big opening and everything… then noone got anything. Nobody could upgrade, they could only do New Contracts, even people with appointments were left for hours. Eventually people just left, I ran for the Fido store by the time it was getting near 10am and the 32GB were sold out in Eaton’s Center and Queen Street…
But the Apple Store said they would reserve a 32gb for me and told me to come back tonight and hopefully they will work out the issues with Rogers/Fido
Yikes. My experience was smooth. Went to Fido kiosk @ Oakridge Mall @ 8am.
I was the 1st person there. The reps were just opening up so i went 2 grab a coffee @ SB. by the time I came back the line grew….by 1.
Was in and out with a 32GB by 8:30am and there were still only 2 customers behind me.
I’m so glad I went to Fido instead of the Apple Store. I called 2 cancel my Personal Shopping appointment I made as a back up and the salesman said it was an absolute zoo. I should head down and take a video of those still in line….with the 3G S!
question..
If i goto rogers today, Get the:
$20 EPP – 200 min anytime, unlimited evenings/weekends starting at 6pm
$35 IPhoneData Pack – 500MB, voice mail, unlimited texting, call display
I can pay 100 bucks to cancel the 35 Data?
I am a student who is always surrounded by wifi so data is pointless, Seems that cancelling would be the wiser investment as in the long run i will save more.
Can i cancell the data for a 100 bucks? X1Zero?
$100 yes but you will have to pay for 1 month service. So $100 + $35.
How did you get the $20 EPP when you’re a student? Rogers said it’s for employees only…?
I called Rogers Wireless first thing this morning (Jun 18), was on hold for about 20 min, then bought an iPhone 3G S right away and signed up for the plans, including the sweet 6GB/$30 data plan. Easy as that! Hope all the suckers had fun waiting in line!

Hey I got my iPhone 3GS for 199$ even if my voice plan was under 30$ with Fido!! I’m soooo satisfied with what I bought today 😛
Rogers Systems have just gone down nationally.
Hey, better than last year. Last year it went down at 9AM PST. This year, 12PM PST.
haha
**coff coff.** pwnage3.0 now coff*
The local Rogers kiosk is taking reservations for phones, since they can’t get through to the mothership to setup new plans, etc.. I made one for a 3Gs, but after seeing your comments that GSM competition is opening this fall, I think I’ll go back and cancel that. I can wait a few months.
By the way, do you have any links that substantiate your claim about more GSM competition coming to Canada?
Thanks!
Nevermind:

Cheers
Lined up at Rogers Plus in London, ON at 9 – first in line. 20 ppl ended up behind me by 10 when the store opened.
I had my white 16Gb 3GS in hand but the sales rep had to phone in to complete the sale and the system went down. He was told over an hour hold time with CSD. Sooo he took the iPhone out of my hands, wrapped a written agreement around it with my name on it and now my new iPhone is sitting in the store waiting for Rogers IT to figure out the backlog – I’m trusting the store reps NOT to sell my phone and hoping I actually have it in hand by the end of the day.
I got the same treatment, right down to the agreement wrapped around the phone. Still waiting on a phone call 🙁
Re: waiting for Rogers to call back — they told me they’d call on Monday. When people start getting off work across the country today, and on the weekend, Rogers will have an even higher volume of customers to deal with. I think their problem will only get worse for the next little while.
Since my phone is literally sitting there with my name on it, they said that I would get it by tomorrow for sure. Such a bummer being the first one in, and then the “new” customers are out before me 🙁
