UltraSn0w: Unlock your iPhone 3G on 3.0 Firmware on Friday!

So last night the iPhone Dev Team demonstrated their soft unlock for the iPhone 3G running 3.0 firmware. With QuickPwn/PwnageTool updates coming shortly after 3.0 is released today, the iPhone 3G 3.0 carrier unlock, dubbed UltraSn0w will be available Friday.

What Does This Mean for iPhone 3G Users?

Here’s a hypothetical situation iPhone 3G users might encounter in the next 3 days…

Wednesday: Install iPhone OS 3.0 firmware via iTunes 8.2 via update. Giggle like a little school girl at all the new features.
Wednesday, still: Later in the day, download QuickPwn/PwnageTool for 3.0. Jailbreak iPhone 3G and enjoy Cydia goodness, yet again. Rogers/Fido users will still be able to make calls. People looking to unlock the baseband (to use the iPhone with ANY carrier) will have to wait.
Thursday: Copy, paste, shake to UNDO. Repeat. Again. Again. And. Again. Finally!
Friday: iPhone Dev Team releases iPhone 3G carrier unlock for 3.0, dubbed UltraSn0w. You install UltraSn0w via Cydia (just like you did yellowsn0w for 2.2 firmware) and your iPhone is unlocked and can now make calls again–on ANY GSM network! *insert golf clap*

What about iPhone 2G Owners?

iPhone 2G users, your baseband will remain the same (04.05.04_G). So all you have to do is update to 3.0 via iTunes, jailbreak using QuickPwn, then unlock via Bootneuter. You will have a fully jailbroken/unlocked iPhone 2G!

What about iPhone 3GS Owners?

Words from the Dev Team: This may in fact be directly applicable to the iPhone 3GS if it can be jailbroken, because it runs the same baseband version. Whether or not it can be jailbroken is a big question right now!
