Update: Rogers Updates Student Plans, Adds My10

At the end of July we reported about the release of the Rogers Student Plans. While the plans were far from great, I had noted that Rogers will announce the free 6PM student evenings overlay option and eventually a My10 option.

The 6PM overlay came almost instantly and now effective August 18 2009, Rogers is adding a My10 option to only the $50 Student Plan option. I will summarize the changes below.

Rogers Student Plans (2009)

BC/Alberta/Quebec/Ontario Regions

$35 Student Plan (unchanged)

  • Minutes: 200 Daytime Minutes + 50 Bonus Minutes
  • Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited @ 6PM
  • Promo: Choose 1 of: Unlimited Messages or My5 Local Talk & Text or Double your Daytime Minutes
  • Term: 3-Years
  • Note: Customer must have a valid student ID from a recognized High School or Post-Secondary Institution

The $35 Student Plan is identical to the normal Rogers $35 Mega Value Plan except that this one includes 6PM evenings for free.

iPhone 3G/3GS Price

Without an attached Data Plan, the iPhone 3G from Rogers will cost you $299 (8GB) and $349 (16GB) under this plan. The iPhone 3GS will cost you $399 (16GB) and $499 (32GB) under this plan.

If you have an attached Data Plan ($40 iPhone Data Value Pack, $30 6GB Data Plan, $25 500MB Data Plan, etc), the iPhone 3G from Rogers will cost you $99 (8GB) and $149 (16GB) under this plan. The iPhone 3GS will cost you $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) under this plan.

$50 Student Plan (changed)

  • Minutes: 200 Daytime Minutes
  • Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited @ 6PM
  • Data: 500MB
  • Promo: My5 Canada-wide My10 Canada-wide
  • Optional: Double your Data to 1GB for $5/month more
  • Term: 3-Years
  • Note: Customer must have a valid student ID from a recognized High School or Post-Secondary Institution

The $50 Student Plan is similar to the normal Rogers $45 Mega Value Voice & Data Plan except that this one includes 6PM evenings for free (but you can add the 6PM overlay for free), Canada-wide My10 instead of Local My5, 50 more daytime minutes, is $5 more and no additional options such as Double your Daytime Minutes or Unlimited Messages.

iPhone 3G/3GS Price

The iPhone 3G from Rogers will cost you $99 (8GB) and $149 (16GB) under this plan. The iPhone 3GS will cost you $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) under this plan.

Rogers Student Plans 2008 Comparison

As a comparison, here are the student plans from last year 2008 for BC/AB/ON/QC:

$25 Student Plan (2008)

  • Minutes: 100 Daytime Minutes
  • Incoming Minutes: 500 Incoming Minutes
  • Evenings & Weekends: 1000 minutes @ 6PM
  • Extra Feature: My10 Local
  • Term: 3-Years

$45 Student Plan (2008)

  • Minutes: 450 Daytime Minutes
  • Incoming Minutes: Unlimited Incoming Minutes
  • Evenings & Weekends: Unlimited @ 6PM
  • Extra Feature: My10 Canada-wide
  • Term: 3-Years

Even with the My10 add-on to the $50 student plan for 2009, both of the student plans from 2008 are infinitely better than the new ones in 2009, especially with the inclusion of My10 on both 2008 student plans and the incoming minutes.

Free 6PM evenings overlay add-on

Don’t forget about the free 6PM evenings overlay add-on that can be added to any existing plan that does not already have 6PM or earlier evenings.

This is a great feature add-on as it saves you $7 per month, but you do need to qualify as a student for the overlay by providing your school name (recognized High School or Post-Secondary Institution) and student ID number (just having a student number and corresponding school name is usually enough, whether you are a student or not).

To qualify for the free 6PM overlay add-on, simply contact Rogers at 1-888-ROGERS1 or visit your local Rogers store and provide a student ID number and corresponding recognized High School/Post-Secondary Institution.

As an existing customer, you must have an “in-market” plan which means that your plan has to be current. Usually this means within the last 12 months, but call Rogers to double check your plan status when you intend to add the 6PM.

As a new Rogers customer, you are covered because your plan is definitely new. When getting new Rogers service, simply request the overlay from your Rogers representative if you are signing up for a plan that is not one of the two new Student Plans.

Beware.

Beware noob questions: Do I have to purchase Caller ID and Visual Voicemail separately? Does unlimited evenings mean that I can call Canadawide for free and incoming are also free?

Thanks if anyone could clarify this!

Yes, CallerID is $8. Visual Voicemail is $8.

Alternatively, you could get both, along with some text messages and
picture/video messages for $20.

Unlimited evenings/weekends means you have unlimited local minutes from a
specific time every evening (for example 6PM) until 7AM the following
morning. Some plans have 5PM, 6PM or 9PM evenings. It depends what you pay
for. On the weekends (Saturday/Sunday) its free local calls.

Minutes are always consider local unless otherwise specified. In other
words, no it is not Canada wide.

Incoming is only free if the people calling you call between those times
where you have unlimited. Whether they call you from a local city or long
distance, it does not matter as long as you are in your local calling zone.

Yeuup. I've got the 25$ Student '08 Plan. Added 10$ more for 2500 texts. It's a beast of a plan.

If I don't add a text package of some sort, do I get charged for incoming texts?

X1Zero

Yes.
If you have my5, then text are free to only those 5 but charged for
everyone else

I just talked to a CSR. Currently I'm paying $7/month for the 6pm weekends because when I signed up this July the student overlay wasn't available. She insisted I needed to be on a student plan to qualify for free 6pm evenings. Anyone know what to do/who to talk to?

X1Zero

Wrong.

Call back and try to talk to someone else.
It even shows CLEARLY on the rogers site, ANY in market plan.
