Rogers iPhone 3G/3GS MMS Takes Customers For A Ride

***UPDATE – HOW TO FIX THIS***

I have located THE fix!

If you are experiencing the problems in this post, follow the fix-guide below:

  1. Make sure you have the iPhone 3.0 Software on your iPhone 3G/3GS
  2. Make sure you have a Data Plan (which starts at $25/month)
  3. Make sure you have NO Data blocks whatsoever, at all.
  4. Make sure you have MMS capabilities (Starting at $5/month for just a Messages Bundle or $0.50/MMS on a pay per use basis) (every iPhone has this after the 3.0 software)
  5. Do a Hard Reset on your iPhone (hold sleep/wake and home button until you see the Apple logo, then let go).
  6. After the Hard Reset, send a test MMS. Make SURE the MMS sends successfully (no errors) and is received successfully. If that does not work….
  7. Call Rogers Data Tech Support @ 1-800-931-3282 and navigate to iPhone Support. Tell them the problem and ask them to Refresh the network connection to your account/iPhone. Your iPhone 3G/3GS will lose its network connection briefly.
  8. After the refresh, send a MMS and you may get a “welcome to…” message. If you do not get the “welcome to…” message, that’s okay. Just make SURE the MMS sends successfully (no errors) and is received successfully.
  9. DONE! WORKING! WIN.

———-

Ever since the release of iPhone software 3.0, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users (as of June 19, 2009) have had the new ability to send/receive MMS or picture/video messages using their iPhone 3G/3GS.

However, hundreds of Rogers Wireless customers have been plagued by NOT being able to send/receive MMS. Many Rogers customers receive the red colored exclamation error when attempting to send a MMS or the MMS sends but is not received.

rogers-iphone2

So, I decided to do some internal digging into this issue and the findings are going to make you cry.

According to numerous Rogers Technical Support employees, Supervisors, and Level-2 Escalation Network Mangers, the only way that the iPhone 3G/3GS can send MMS is if the account that the iPhone 3G/3GS is on has a Data Plan and has no Data blocks whatsoever. You do not necessarily need a MMS package, but if you do not have one, you will be charged at $0.50/MMS.

Let me just make this a little more clear.

To get MMS officially working on a Rogers Wireless iPhone 3G/3GS, you need the following:

  • iPhone 3.0 Software on your iPhone 3G/3GS
  • A Data Plan (which starts at $25/month)
  • No Data blocks whatsoever, at all.
  • MMS capabilities (Starting at $5/month for just a Messages Bundle or $0.50/MMS on a pay per use basis) (every iPhone has this after the 3.0 software)

Additionally, it was said that this is specific to the iPhone 3G/3GS. Unlike a basic dumbphone that can send MMS without a data plan, the iPhone 3G/3GS apparently uses some kind of “Data specific string” to send MMS. To me, this does not make sense at all. MMS and Data are separate services that should work so long as each individual service is added/enabled, but apparently, the iPhone 3G/3GS is the exception.

So MMS is not covered by the Data Plan yet you need a Data Plan to even send MMS. Also, if you do not have a MMS package, you incur additional MMS charges at $0.50/MMS, even though you have a Data Plan. It is as if the Data Plan “enables” the MMS and the MMS package simply “saves” you money on MMS by giving you 1000 messages or in some cases unlimited. What a scam!

Moreover, if you have a Data plan, have no Data blocks whatsoever, and have MMS capabilities (pay per use or a MMS package), guess what, MMS still will not work because apparently this is a “national problem affecting all Rogers iPhone 3G/3GS accounts”. The issue is being worked on at this time by “updating” each customer account.

Here are a few scenarios regarding this issue:

———-

If you have a Data Plan

  1. If you have no Data blocks and you have MMS capabilities: MMS will not work until the “national problem” is resolved.
  2. If you have Data blocks and you have MMS capabilities: MMS will not work because you have Data blocks
  3. If you have no Data blocks and you have no MMS package: MMS will not work until the “national problem” is resolved and when it is resolved, you will be charged at $0.50/MMS.
  4. If you have Data blocks and you have no MMS package: MMS will not work because you have Data blocks.

———-

If you have no Data Plan

  1. If you have no Data blocks and you have no MMS package: MMS will not work because you do not have a Data Plan. When the “national problem” is resolved, you will be charged at $0.50/MMS and charged for any Data usage.
  2. If you have Data blocks and you have no MMS package: MMS will not work because you do not have a Data Plan and you have Data blocks.
  3. If you have Data blocks and you have MMS capabilities: MMS will not work because you do not have a Data plan and you have Data blocks
  4. If you have no Data blocks and you have MMS capabilities: MMS will not work because you do not have a Data Plan.

———-

In summary, it seems that you must have a Data Plan and you must not have any Data blocks of any kind. Whether or not you have a MMS package does not seem to matter because you can still successfully use MMS on a pay per use basis, assuming you have a Data Plan.

At this time, it is unknown if Fido customers are affected, but overall, this is simply said, ridiculous. If a dumbphone can send MMS without a Data Plan, why can’t an iPhone 3G/3GS.

In attempt to gather information and find some kind of fix, please post below the following information:

  1. What Carrier version you are running? (Go to Settings > General > About and what does it say beside “Carrier”)
  2. Which scenario are you that is posted above? (You can just copy/paste it into the comments)
  3. Does MMS sending/receiving work for you?

I have Rogers 4.0. When updating to OS 3.0 i DID NOT upgrade carrier functions or whatever the line is. About 75% of my sent MMS’ are received BUT when i want to now send a “Group SMS” it automatically says “Group MMS” at the top and no-one in the group gets the text!

I bought the 3GS off contract (I still have one year left on my Fido contract). Before I purchased the 3GS, I asked fido to block all data usage and all internet on my account (limiting me to surfing only when I am in a wifi zone). I have tried sending MMS mesages, but am unable to (red exclamation mark error message). This has been a total disaster, with Fido and Rogers – to me it seems as though Rogers has just about screwed up every step of the way (beginning with the network crash on launch day, just like last year). There are so many reasons why I was MORE than happy to pay a fortune for the phone and avoid a new contract. I have no interest in committing to Fido (Rogers) long term. Thieves in an (at least at present) uncompetitive market. Once I go off contract in 10 months or so, you can be sure I’ll be giving Fido Retentions a call and demanding as much as possible, free of charge, just so that they can keep me as a paying customer.

Up until this morning I was receiving the red exclamation. Then I tried sending a contact v-card to myself and it worked. Now all of a sudden all of my MMS work fine. I’m on fido and it’s quite possible that they updated my account, but either way I have now have properly functioning MMS, both receiving and sending

Fido 4.1

If you have a Data Plan

1. If you have no Data blocks and you have MMS capabilities:

Sending & receiving: no luck get the red exclamation.

You’d think Roger/Fido would have had this worked out before 3.0 was released. Gary, I agree with you it’s text messaging, I could do it on my Treo!!! Rogers/Fido are feeding us some bs just to rake in more $ on the mms……jerks!

*update* Just tried and mms went though! However the receiver must log into Fido’s picture/video messaging site???? What’s the point of that. Should show up as a text message!!!

I never thought about using MMS, until I saw how OS 3.0 does it. It was only $3 extra a month for me to add it. It has worked flawlessly for me, but I am on the 6GB/$30 plan.

I’m trying to be patient with Rogers especially after they attempted to do the right thing with the upgrade pricing. I’ve had my 3G iPhone since July 11th, 2008, it was a disaster buying on day one, but after that my experience was flawless for about 9 – 10 months, then I started to get a lot of dropped calls, call failed, and visual voicemail problems. I’ve now switched to the 3GS, which was also a disaster. I called customer relations at 7:00 pm before launch and was told I couldn’t upgrade at any price, then Rogers announces $199 upgrade price for day one 3G customers who spend $100 a month. I called Rogers at 7:00 am on launch day, they did what they called an “internet account check”, he said I qualified for $199 price and he removed my credit limit so I could just add the phone to my bill, but it was going to take 5-7 days for them to mail it, he also said I could go to a corporate store and do the same thing. I was first in line at the store and took 7 hours to get my phone, and after the 7 hours they still charged me the wrong price, and i had to spend another almost 2 hours on the phone to get the right price.

Now there are the SMS price increase and problems and the threat of higher tethering prices in the future. Apple and AT&T are giving 3GS owners a $30 itunes giftcard for experiencing slow activations for a few hours. Many Rogers customers have had a similar experience to mine and didn’t get any credit. I absolutely love the iPhone but it hasn’t been easy being an iPhone user in Canada.

Investors wanted.

Need to raise several hundred million. Desire is to build a cellular network. Focus on good service and no-charge extras. Good Value. Reasonable Prices. Informed Staff.

MMS will send without data use. Phone’s voicemail structure will work without the need to adopt a “value pack”. There will be three steps with no contracts:

1) select the phone you want to buy. sorry, no strange discounts or schedules of varied prices.

2) select voice plan (only one to choose from and it is unlimited)

3) select data plan (only one to choose from and it is unlimited)

You want to add text messages? MMS? Visual Voicemail? Sorry, those are not options. They are included with your voice service or data service (as makes sense).

Raised to date: $50,000 (that would be mine) 😉

NOTICE: I’ll need good technical staff and also some customer service oriented people. Current Rogers or Fido staff need not apply (X1Zero, you are an exception)…

This is just bull to begin with! I’m already spending almost $100.00 a month on my 3 year contract, and Rogers/Fido want to charge me an extra $5.00 a month just to send MMS? It should be included already in the $15 crap pack that Im getting. And the fact that they can’t even get it working on the network yet is just bull____! I’ve been able to send MMS on my old crappy Motorola for almost 10 years! All we did is just upgrade software on our IPhones, they should not be able to charge more for something the phone was technically already able todo. Also if MMS is using some of your data to send, we are getting dinged twice. It should be able to use data only for MMS. Rogers is pissing me off! Anyone know if there is a petition started against Rogers charging extra for MMS? Viva la Revolution!

Carrier Version: Rogers 4.1
Scenario: 500Mb Data Plan / No Data Blocks / No MMS Package
Does MMS Work?: Yes, I have sent and received MMS with a friend, who is also a Rogers user.

This is pretty pathetic on Rogers’s part… once again one thing that has me praying for a wider selection of GSM Carriers. Best of luck to those in need of a fix for MMS to work and, for me, hopefully MMS won’t cost 50c per message forever.

Is there any fkn way to be able to send mms threw our MMS plan? I’ve tried contacting Rogers for that issue and they told me the same thing about the data thing. Is there any way to have it working with jailbreaking the phone or wtv ?

I was so excited for 3.0 only for the mms capability but the data issue pisses me off!

What the hell is a “Data Block” ??

I have 6GB data plan and therefore pay already to send data. Another $5 per month to sign up for an MMS plan??

Utterly, ridiculous!

I will be on the phone tomorrow to express my total displeasure with this.

Just got my 3Gs delivery today. Restored my back-up from the 3G and activated the 3G on my son’s number. Initial MMS attempts resulted in “picture messaging” text message that required logging on to their website and entering a four digit code. But once that was done, both phones send and receive MMS whether connected to wifi or not.
Carrier: Rogers [no numbers after]
Data: 6Gb/month
Package: Iphone VV Value Pack

MMS works perfectly on both phones.

Fido is a bit better but not much! I have their standard iPhone plan with data at 500 MB. I’ve been able to send a couple of MMS however as soon as I send you an MMS THEN MY SMS DOESNT WORK RIGHT!!! As long as I don’t mms you then SMS works fine. It’s only impacting those I’ve sent an mms to so needless to say stopped sending any mms. Now the only way I can respond to regular SMS from them now is to delete your reply in the message OR exit and send a new message. It’s taken them a year and still can’t get SMS TO WORK RIGHT??? BRUTAL!!!

I have:
iPhone 3G
firmware 3.0
NO data plan
ALL data BLOCKED
mms package.

I had a lot of problems sending mms, almost every one would fail.
I had EDGE and 3g turned OFF on my phone.

I turned on edge and 3G and now all of my mms go through first try.
I tested it with just EDGE on and only about 1 in 6 would send properly.

Complain to Apple – let them put the pressure on Rogers, coz they sure don't listen to us consumers.

If the problem is unique to Apple iPhone then let them work it out with Rogers. So far Rogers have been inept & inflexible when dealing with this problem.

Carrier Version: 5.0 Rogers
No Data Plan, Unlimited MMS/SMS messages
Can send MMS messages to other iphone, however do get red explanation mark often. Will resend (sometimes once or twice) and then goes thru. This is not working on WiFi as no WiFi in area when sending messages.
This rules out the must have data plan and no blocks for Rogers.
