Earlier today, the 8GB iPhone 3GS became available for purchase from the Apple Canada Online Store.
Just as reported earlier in the month, the iPhone 3GS (and the iPhone 4) will be unlocked when purchased at full price from the Apple Canada Online Store. The 8GB is a new capacity for the iPhone 3GS, previously featuring 16GB and 32GB. The 8GB capacity will also only come in black.

When you purchase your iPhone from the Apple Online Store, you’ll get it commitment-free. So you can sign up for service with the carrier of your choice and change your carrier at any time.
At this time, it seems that the 8GB iPhone 3GS will not be available at Apple Retail Stores and instead, Apple Stores will continue to offer the 16GB/32GB iPhone 3GS in black and white locked to a Canadian carrier. This will likely change next month with the launch of the iPhone 4.
The 8GB iPhone 3GS has free shipping and a shipping time of 1 – 3 days after orders are placed through the Apple Canada Online Store. The device will ship with iOS4, will be unlocked (visit your local carrier or Apple Store for a SIM card), and is available for $549.00 (add your province tax rate).

Hope the iPhone 4 will be unlocked from the big 3 carriers in Canada like other countries around the world
If you buy it from the carrier, it will be locked. If you buy it from Apple
at full price, it will be unlocked.
I don't get it. If you're going to spend that kind of money on a phone, why would anyone choose this phone at this price instead of an iPhone 4 for relatively little more?
cannot figure out a reason of why lock us if we sign up the contract…..
To ensure you can't take the phone anywhere but the carrier
so that people don't get the phone for under $200 and then pay the $150 early termination fee and run for half the price 😛
as for it being unlocked….just software unlock via a jailbreak when/if available.
Does anyone know if the retail stores will be selling unlocked iPhone's at full price too, or is it only online?

gosh. i wish they would at least lock it on to more than one carrier thruout the world and give us a list.
Like their own carrier in Canada. Then, every other country have like one carrier specified you can use it on.
I wish someone could answer this for me. Since the release date for the iphone 4 in Canada is July 23rd, when are preorders going to be aviable in the apple online store?
July 23 is a rumor. Not a guarantee.
