What a scam you could buy an unlocked contract free device from Apple for only $45 more.
Why is the early upgrade fee so expensive?
What’s the price breakdown of that?
Better buying it outright.
I think it’s $25 per month multiplied by the number of months left on the contract
good point Mike356, if I was even considering the upgrade at that price, the phone direct from Apple unlocked for $45 more is a better deal.
It’s $20 per month for the early upgrade fee for every month before your 30th month anniversary. This used to b 24 months until May when a quiet directive went out to the stores.
the new upgrade fee is stupid, every year apple had allowed customers who purchased the iphone the previous year to get the new activation prices, that is why there is an outrage.
It was Rogers, apple has no say in the early upgrade pricing

Looks like you can only check once per 24 hours per e-mail address.
Either way, both numbers I checked came back with unable to determine eligibility.

Anyone knows why it is $209/$319/$419 instead of $159/$269/$369 even if you’re no longer on contract?
Ya. That’s strange. Looks like Rogers wants us to change carriers. Even with contract the early upgrade fee would get you the subsidized pricing under their new policies.
Ya, I’d like to know why the prices are higher than Bell and Telus?
Me too!!! My contract expires/expired this month and it’s showing $209/$319/$419 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee….
This is ridiculous. My 3 year contract from my 3G is done. I’ve been paying month-to-month and Rogers is telling me $419 plus the upgrade fee. What is wrong here? Should I not be getting the $369?
Customers who renew on
select three-year terms may be eligible for a one-time $50 Hardware Upgrade
Rebate credit. Credit to be applied to customer’s invoice. Offer subject to
change without notice. Full Hardware Upgrade Rebate details available in store.
In the fine print there’s a “$50 Hardware Upgrade Rebate credit” that will be applied to your invoice. This brings the prices back down to $159/$269/$379 but wtf. These guys are all about smoke & mirrors.
If they don’t offer early upgrades at regular (and reasonable) prices like they have for the last two iPhone launches I’m either selling my iphone4 and using that money to payout the ecf on the contract or buying unlocked and starting the countdown to leave Rogers.
Their retention plans used to be competitive in the market when they were the only GSM show in town and before the new players arrived but if I have to put up with garbage signal, I’d rather support one of the up-starts.
What is the point with “$50 Hardware Upgrade Rebate credit” to have the $209/$319/$419 charged instead of $159/$269/$369? Chances are Rogers will charge you $209 first (16GB example) and credit you $50 like 3 months later. In the mean time, the use that money to start their Bank.
Also, here is one thing I learn after talking to a level 2 rep at Rogers. I had two lines under my name.
One ‘started/new activation’ at Sept 2009 and one ‘renewed/hardware upgrade’ at Sept 2009. Both with a 3 yr agreement.
The one that started back in Sept 2009 is eligible for hardware upgrade with no Early Upgrade Fee but the one upgraded back in Sept 2009 has a $90 Early Upgrade Fee.
+$35 admin fee is really a ripoff.
I don’t have data plan so lets say I get the 16GB, it will be $209 – $50 + $90 EUF + $100 Data ECF + $35 admin fee + HST = $433.92 for a locked 4S on 3 year term. vs. $733.37 at Apple store….
I checked & found I have to pay a $45 early upgrade fee. I’d wait until December, but my brand new 3GS replacement has a smashed screen. At least it is just a one-time fee.
Anyway, I reserved a 32gig on Friday, so I’d probably lose that if I now cancelled it.
Looking forward to the 4S ?
seriously. Without a 3 year contract.
I think I’ll wait for iPhone 5
Bye bye Rogers. I will be cancelling my reservation. I suggest that we all flood their lines and call in to complain. Maybe and only maybe will they realize and change policies and prices.
They don’t care…. They never did.
Just cancelled my reservation. I’m buying it outright and switching carriers.
Same here. Pure insanity. BY the way…people are so pissed at their corporate greed their now targets of the occupy wall street protests. It’s spreading like wildfire over social media as we speak.
with select new 3 year term voice and data plans, plus a $45.00 Early Upgrade Fee*. If I get this right, bye bye the 6gig plan… glad I order from Apple.
Before everyone starts talking out of their ass, the prices are $50 more than a new activation because you get a $50 mail in rebate. Also The early upgrade is $20 a month x remaining months until you can do a upgrade. Bitching about that is just retarded. If you signed up for a iPhone 4 just last year do you expect Rogers to just give you another one this year for the same discounted price. Go ask bell what their early upgrade fee is.
Why the dumb mail in rebate though? And where do they have that advertised?Kinda stupid on Thier part for not showing that in the pricing.
Where did you see about the $50 mail in rebate? I don’t have a problem with the early upgrade fee, but it seems strange that they are not clearly indicating it includes a $50 mail in rebate at $209.
It was in the fine print in the email follow up to the upgrade request.
Thanks, I see that now, it says:
Customers who renew on select three-year terms may be eligible for a
one-time $50 Hardware Upgrade Rebate credit. Credit to be applied to
customer’s invoice. Offer subject to change without notice. Full
Hardware Upgrade Rebate details available in store.
I dont understand it because when the device was pre-ordered it was listed as $269. Why send an email with $319 and have $50 rebate in the fine print ?
Bell’s early HUP is the same price. They also only allow a HUP at 30 months. Complaints don’t help because Rogers and Bell own the CRTC and pay them lots on money to re-enforce their plans (just look at UBB, throttling and Wireless licenses).
Uh, I thought telus has crappy upgrade fees (15 x months remaining), but rogers is even worse.
You are better off buying the 64GB unlocked from Apple for $849 then the same phone from Rogers for $419+$360+$35=$814 and be tied to a 3 year contract.
does fido offer something similar?
SOO happy i decided to pre-order at the early morning from apple, I did have a reservation on rogers just in case but It’s gone now, no early upgrading for iPhone 4 people, screw you rogers! I wouldn’t pay 209.00 + 320.00 + 35 dollar fee to re-sign with you.
Once again Rogers makes it a ‘pain in the butt’ to upgrade your iPhone. Upgrading locks us in for another three years. Why charge us more. If this upgrade policy holds, looks like I will have to purchase unlocked from Apple. Which is probably what I should be doing anyways.
UNBELIEVABLE. Rogers wants a total of $564 from me (early iPhone 4 adopter) in exchange for a locked phone only on select plans and a contract renewal. Hahahhaha ya right. Hello apple/unlocked here I come.
Too late, Too much, Too Bad! They could not answer questions by phone…. So good bye Rogers !!!
I still hope they will come up with a promotion later on in the week and this online tool will be updated. There is no way I am buying from Rogers if they try to charge me that price!
WTF is a Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee?
It’s a way to rip you off, see rogers already inflates the price of most phone. Is that enough well for rogers no. A upgrade fee is just so you can get ripped off.
BS! If I have to purchase the phone outright I will get it directly from apple and I’ll be leaving to one of rogers competitors. I’ve dealt with a lot of crap from rogers and the only reason I put up with it and stayed with them was because of their lax upgrade policy for early iPhone adopters. I got the 3g right when it came out and they allowed me to upgrade to the 3gs right when it came out. Same story with 3gs to iPhone 4. If they ax this policy they will ax me as a customer.
What the hell? First you say you put up with Roger’s crap all the time, and then you mention how nice Rogers has been to you by letting you upgrade early two years in a row? So greedy!
Robbers!! And Im not only talking about Rogers, Im talking about all of the wireless companies in Canada. Just a few miles down south you can upgrade your phone every year. In Canada they changed it to 24 months now they changed it again to 30 months!!! All of these companies love stealing from us. Why not allow us customers to upgrade to any phone we want with 1 year? More people will buy meaning more and more money for them, money is what they like. Let’s create a petition online or a Facebook Page to show our discomfort with them.
So does someone understand what that 35$ fee is?
cash grab
My upgrade pirce is $774. Still cheaper than buying from Apple.
Enjoy your $774 locked Rogers phone buddy. They are robbing you and by continuing with such a stupid business transaction you are showing them that it is ok. You are better of spending a tiny bit more and getting the phone unlocked from Apple. Your resell value will also be higher.
Yeah, my post was meant to be sarcastic. Their prices are ridiculous.
Wow….. Cheaper for me to get an unlocked one from apple…. Bye bye Robbers, I mean Rogers. Another lost customer.
Same here. It’s $15 cheaper to buy an unlocked device from Apple and don’t even have to sign a new 3-year contract. Get a clue, Rogers. What is it worth to retain $100/month customers?
Ugh terrible, but expected. I’ll just buy one outright unlocked from Apple then by the time the 5 rolls around I’ll be eligible for a full discount or can switch carriers if I want. You suck Rogers
I did the math on my own for how much rogers has made off of me upgrading my iPhone every year in service charges – upgrade fees and the remaining cost on the phone and rogers made approx $5000 in profit off of my family…. I think its only fair that I get best pricing upgrades… this is ridiculous….. ill be on the phone with rogers tomorrow to talk about it
Ha they really don’t care anymore, retentions tell you to f off pretty much. That’s what I got.
The upgrade fee is absurd. We are paying more pretty much what the iPhone 4 cost originally for Rogers to recoup subsidy. So the 14 months of over $200 a month that I have paid so far equates to $0 in subsidy payoff. Here I was a proponent of Rogers and convinced family and friends to switch due to their better upgrade options not any longer. I will buy unlocked and start my move away from Rogers. Rogers coverage in the areas I travel is spotty but stayed due to upgrade options. Now Telus or Bell are looking so much better.
Anyone want to host a petition…. to see if we can get this changed!
I like the idea of an unlocked phone but wouldnt it be way more expensive ? I realize you can sell it in the end but upfront you still need to buy the phone then get a plan which I’m sure is still at least $50 a month. Or are there cheaper plans if its unlocked ?
No one is really paying attention to your question, but I too am wondering the same thing. I’m actually currently have no plan with anyone and just bought the unlocked from Apple. Wondering if I can get a good 6GB plan for cheap now.
+1 to your question. Would like to know that too.
Thanks
If you buy an unlocked unit from Apple you can have my 6 GB/$30 plan. You can change the voice to whatever you want. Hell, I’ll even give you $100 to take it over…I think there is a year and a few months left.
When does iOS 5 come out on Wednesday?
I am with rogers and not on any f’ing contract. I use my own phone and this is the email i get for the iphone 4s
iPhone 4S 16GB
$209.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
iPhone 4S 32GB
$319.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
iPhone 4S 64GB
$419.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
iPhone 4 8GB
$149.00 + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration Fee
Why the f$ck does it cost me $209 when the phone is $159?
Why the hell should i pay a HUAF…i am not even upgrading from any of “their” phones..
Looks like the website is screwed up
It’s an add $50 to the price of the phone and give a $50 rebate if you have a qualifying plan type of deal
$35 admin fee is straight up cash grab
So this new HUAF is mandatory for all users?
will a new customer pay this as well? does not make sence to charge this when i am not upgrading anything…wonder what fido is doing…
Its a complete cash grab. It goes like this:
Rogers: Everyone is selling the 16gb iphone 4s for $159 so we must do the same.
Us: Sweet! that means we get the phone for $109 because Rogers has a $50 rebate on renewal of plans.
Rogers Manager #1: Oh no. Because of our rebate, our customers are going to get the phone for $109. I know, let’s artificially inflate the price of the iphone to $209, that way when they get the rebate applied, they pay $159. This way, we get to save $50 on each iphone we sell which would make us millions of dollars.
Rogers Manager #2: lol, that’s a great idea. i got another. Let’s make a policy that the $50 rebate does not apply to plans received through retentions. Most iphone users have retention plans and therefore the rebate won’t apply. We’ll be able to make another $50 off each customer.
Rogers CEO: those are fantastic ideas! With all the money we make we can buy another sports team.
I also got an “unable to determine eligibility” response. I’m thinking it’s because I’m on a corporate plan (paying for it myself, though).
How about others with the same response… are you on corporate plans?
I’m on a corporate plan (EPP). I got mine back correct. Well the prices were different than what they actually charged me but thats ok. They may have pre-applied my $50 credit. $419 came through on my email check. (which I did after reserving just to see what would happen. my early upgrade fee was the same that they quoted over the phone though)
Hardware Sub Total Cost:369.00Hardware Tax:47.97Hardware Total Cost:416.97Thats what came through on my reservation confirmation email. iPhone 4S 64GB$419.00 + $45.00 Early Upgrade Fee* + $35 Hardware Upgrade Administration FeeThats what came through on my upgrade test.
Iv upgraded my iPhone every year since I got my 3G for the lowest price because of the returning customer discount. Has anyone heard about that this year?
Anyone try the retention department yet?
I am going to wait till the 14th for that…
they waived the early upgrade fee on an android phone for me today (because the iphone isn’t out yet they don’t know if they can) ill be trying again this weekend, (its going to be hell on friday)
I tried but only to get the Administration Fee waived. They basically told me to fu*k off.
I don’t mind paying EUF, oh well, I want the new phone myself earlier, so yea~ no biggie, but that 35 dollars admin fee just totally suck~ and wtf is that telling me I am eligible for 50 dollars rebate, however, in the same time u rogers increase iphone price for 50 bucks. DO YOU REALLY THINK WE R THAT DUMB???
500 for a 64gb and I only have 7 months left on my current plan…..I will be going to Apple and buying. Makes no sense to sign for 3 years so I can save 300.
I’m trying to figure out total cost.
Is there taxes on top of quoted price?
Even though I never took a subsidy rogers put me on a term. And its $420 for me to upgrade, or $500 to cancel rogers are the biggest crooks in the world!
If all of you guys used your head for a second you would screw Rogers the same way they are screwing you, are you stuck with a ECF if you cancel?? Then go find a place off the grid where there isn’t service, like Yukon, or NFLD and northern Quebec, find an address and tell em you are moving there they will waive the ecf…. Give it back to those crooked sons of bitches…. I got 1200$ in ecf waived fuck rogers..
Dude, are you serious? That’s awesome! Do you need “proof” that you’re moving? I want details!

If I purchase a phone from rogers with no term, will they sill charge me the hardware upgrade fee?
nope~ they don’t~ but its same price as Apple store, u might as well go to apple and buy one, its unlocked, even better~
I already reserve an iphone with rogers and it looks like I could get it on launch day. I don’t want to line up at the apple store – in the COLD. 🙁
how early do you guys think i’d have to line up at a BC apple store to get a white 32 gb? oh and im going to do a early hardware upgrade through rogers. the apple store rep said that i don’t have to pay anything in-store and that its all charged to my next invoice?
can some please confirm this?
Correct. That’s the main reason I am purchasing from Rogers. If I put it on my credit card, and buy from Apple, I’d have to pay interest, and end up paying way more than I would from Rogers.
hey mike, so when i go the the apple store this friday and hopefully do get my hand on the iphone model I want there just going to make me sign some papers and set me up? do i pay anything at all in-store?
No, everything for the phone upgrade gets charged to your Rogers bill. Unless you get a case or AppleCare, you don’t pay inatore
hey mike, so when i go the the apple store this friday and hopefully do get my hand on the iphone model I want there just going to make me sign some papers and set me up? do i pay anything at all in-store?
All I want it an iPhone 4s 32gb white.
I have upgraded every year since the 2g (I got my first Canadian 3G iPhone as a new contract customer)
This year it changes!
$319.00 (iPhone) + $340.00 HUP + 35 HUP Admin Fee
Well I’ll just keep my phone and run my contract out. I will then, leave Rogers and not return as a customer. I will also tell everyone Rogers are price cheating Fu€kers
@Mike_Moore
Twitter
Terrible, I don’t see how Rogers is going to keep Apple early adopters … it’s not like there’s not any other options. I have to pay $400 extra to upgrade? I’m not even sure if I should buy unlocked or cancel my account.
I am cancelling and switching to Bell, they have a better coverage and better plans for sure!
I don’t understand why Rogers is allowed to charge $360.00 on top of the $205.00 when I bought a iPhone 4S for my son last September 2010. I thought the hardware upgrade was 24 months when I renewed a family plan to get him the phone last year? I am getting so sick of these carriers. I was told Bell had an exchange program that you can change your phone every year for a fee. Just turn in your phone and get a new one.
Anyone know if Rogers can change their HUP policy back and forth.
Carriers lock you in for 30 months before you can change hardware. I have a 3G myself because I wanted to wait for something good but my 3G is so slow and crashes all the time. It is ridiculous if you want the newest technology. Anyone have any tips as I am so sick of Rogers!!!!
Can I get a SKYPE number or something to get away from these bloodsucking carriers????
How likely are you to get a new iPhone 4S if you line up outside the apple store on october 14, 2011? & to Anyone that lined up last year for the iPhone 4, was there a long wait if you were doing the hardware upgrade and did they have sufficient stock? also how early did you line up?
If you go to an Apple Store, you’re basically guaranteed a device. But it really depends on which store you go to to assess how busy it’ll get.
They always have plenty of stock and it doesn’t hurt to show up early.
I cancelled my reservation. I have always gotten the iPhone each year and this year Rogers wants $785 for the 64 GB phone. for $100 more I can buy it outright.
I decided if I am going to have to pay $320 to either get the phone or break my contract, I am going to move ALL my serviced and Rogers will lose $4900 annually.
The new policy is a money grab because they realize there is an aftermarket value for the iPhone.
Shame on them.
Mine showed $369… I’m on an EPP… does this mean I’ll get $50 on top of that? Since it was never $419 for me?
