Foxconn Chairman Confirms Preparations For Apple’s Rumored Television

A report from China Daily reveals that Foxconn chairman Terry Gou addressed the topic of Apple’s rumored television yesterday during a news conference in Shanghai.

According to the report, Foxconn is actively making preparations for Apple’s upcoming television, further leveraging its partnership with Sharp to push LCD display technology.

The report also reveals that the name for Apple’s television may in fact be “iTV” and may include Siri, FaceTime, and be constructed of aluminum. Overall the television may look very similar to Apple’s current Cinema Display.

Gou said Foxconn is making preparations for iTV, Apple Inc’s rumored upcoming high-definition television, although development or manufacturing has yet to begin.

iTV reportedly features an aluminum construction, Siri, and FaceTime video calling.

Foxconn’s recent 50-50 joint venture factory with Sharp in Japan is one of the preparations made for the new device, Gou added.

While nothing is completely confirmed, the prospect of an Apple-branded television is exciting, especially one that is Siri controlled! What do you think? Is there room for an Apple television set in your life?

I can also confirm preparations for my taxes next year, my retirement, my funeral, etc. Unfortunately, these vague ‘confirmation’ stories will continue until Apple finally announces some kind of TV. The details, when they are finally are known, will likely be underwhelming in terms of hardware. The software will be the key to the experience. I hope that whatever content delivery arrangements will be made will lead to savings for us as consumers. Sadly, I’m worried that this will just continue to tie us to our cable & satellite providers where we will continue to overpay for our services just so that we can have the channels we actually watch bundled with a bunch of stuff that will never be on our sets.

Yep, many will. I really do hope it is a game changer…I’m just cautious on how service providers are going to handcuff us somehow. Oh, I don’t even want to think about how our experience in Canada will not be comparable to whatever the US is able to do for content deals.

I can see something like these being great for my grandparents or others who are too ‘technology challenged’ to own a laptop or smartphone. The idea of simple to use video calling from their TV will have a lot of appeal to older people, i think.
