Here’s the Biggest News and Reveals from Nintendo’s Mario Kart World Direct

Today, Nintendo hosted a 15-minute-long Mario Kart World Direct, dedicated to the upcoming racing game, scheduled to launch on June 5th.

Throughout the Mario Kart World Direct, Nintendo emphasized the core features and mechanics of the game. Additionally, Mario Kart World’s sheer size and breadth were also given the spotlight. Suffice to say, the upcoming launch title for Nintendo Switch 2 is bound to be the biggest Mario Kart title to date.

The Mario Kart World Direct showed off the vast interconnected world. As explained by Nintendo, the game features an interconnected overworld where players can navigate roads, rivers, and more between courses. With a Free Roam option, Mario Kart World allows players to find P Switches, hidden coins, and other collectibles. This also allows players the chance to discover shortcuts and more.

Mario Kart World offers three distinct modes to play through. Grand Prix is the traditional four-course race circuit. This includes the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup and more, all held across the interconnected world. Between races, players will have to drive from one course to the next. In the Knockout Mode, players will have to race from one end to the other end of the world in extended rallies and place high enough to continue. Finally, in Battle Mode, Mario Kart World players will collect coins in Coin Runners or burst opponents’ balloons in Balloon Battle.

We received a sneak peek at some of the new courses, like Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown City, and Starview Peak. Mario Kart World features 24-player races. Drivers featured in the game include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, Cow and many, many more. To customize the appearance of drivers, players can make pit stops at Yoshi’s and grab take-out food. These will sometimes unlock cosmetic items for characters.

Mario Kart World also features new items for players to use competitively during races. Some of the new items shown include the Coin Shell, providing a series of coins to collect for a speed boost. The game also includes combative items like the Hammer, Ice Flower, and Mega Mushroom. There’s also an item to call on Kamek, transforming opponents on the track.

Nintendo confirms that Mario Kart World will leverage the GameChat functionality first shown at the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct. Players can sync up with friends, locally or online. Up to four players can play local split screen. With local wireless, up to eight players can join in. Using Nintendo Switch Online, players can race, hang out in Free Roam, and more online.

Mario Kart World is due to launch on June 5th, alongside the Nintendo Switch 2. As of now, there’s no confirmation on Canadian pricing for the game. Additionally, due to the ongoing tariff disputes in the US, pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 have been temporarily paused in Canada. There’s still no word on when pre-orders will become available through major retailers.
