Apple to Test OGS Technology for Next-Generation iPad mini Display [Rumour]

The China Times reports (Via AppAdvice)Apple is already searching for touch display alternatives for the second-generation iPad mini, and this time the Cupertino company is working with Shenzen Century Science & Technology (SCST), a Foxconn subsidiary.

The iPad mini’s 7.9-inch, non-Retina display caused some disappointment among reviewers, but as the recent reports show, the demand for this mini tablet is high. Yet every hint suggests Apple will switch to the Retina Display with the second-generation iPad mini, and the new OGS (one-glass-touch) technology could help the company cut the costs.

From what The China Times sources has heard, the first OGS photomasks from SCST have been sent to Apple for testing. If the technology meets Apple’s high standards, SCST will likely join Apple’s supply chain.

A Chinese website highlights the potential of the OGS technology:

“OGS 30% cost savings compared to the traditional G / G-type touch panel the transmittance can increase, plus do not change the LCD panel process, the small amount of diversity production, and therefore has become the development trend of the touch panel industry. However, Li Xiangyu reference TPK long Zhangheng Yao pointed out, the OGS program threshold is still high, including the problems faced by the chain reaction of the touch sensitive panel hardness, transmittance industry chain.”

From this perspective, and if the tests results are positive, we bet on Apple choosing Innolux as its LCD supplier — a step that has been rumoured for a while now — as the next move in its separation from Samsung.
