Real Racing 3 – Freemium Can Be Awesome [Review]
The latest game in the Real Racing franchise, Real Racing 3, is the first to use a freemium model, which is awesome. This is a high quality racing sim that you never have to spend money on.
Real Racing 3 is beautiful. The tracks, but especially the cars look photorealistic. There are 46 cars from 12 manufacturers available, such as the Ford Shelby GT500, and Lamborghini Gallardo. Cars around the same price point handle, and accelerate about the same. But you’ll start to notice improvements once you buy a few upgrades, and spend more and more money on new cars.
Driving your cars is pretty easy, with the driver assists on. And you can really test your skills or make your life harder by turning them off. Also, the tilt and touch controls work well with 7 configurations to choose from. So if you don’t like tilt steering, you can use touch steering.
The freemium model works great, if you don’t mind waiting. Upgrading, servicing, and delivering new cars take time, but you can spend gold coins to eliminate this wait time. And as you’d expect, you can buy in game currency, gold coins, or cars packs, to accelerate your progression.
However, after about an hour of play, and only having to wait a few minutes for an oil change and some upgrades, I was able to buy a second car. This meant I was never stuck waiting, because when one car was being upgraded or serviced, I would race with the other.
Real Racing 3 is one of the best racing games on the App Store. So if you love racing, and can handle some waiting during the first hour or so, download Real Racing 3 for free from the App Store here. Then, let us know what you think of the new freemium model. Do you like it or would you rather just pay for the game?
