Samsung Galaxy S4 Launch Helps Restore Apple Shareholder Confidence

Samsung unveiled its latest flagship smartphone the Galaxy S4 yesterday in New York’s Radio City Music Hall, but the majority of Apple analysts have remained with the impression that the updates were more evolutionary than revolutionary, as CNET notes.

Apple-stockprice
Fact is the phone looks very similar to the Galaxy S3, but it indeed has several improvements like the 441ppi display [sic], 13MP camera and other components, as well as software updates.

In other words, the hype surrounding “The Next Big Thing” had a somewhat artificial feeling, as the “thing” is indeed big – it sports a 5-inch display – but missed the wow-factor. And Apple’s shareholders reacted immediately to the “thing” as Apple’s stock price was up 2.5% today when the overall stock market has been trading in red.

The fear of Apple losing its mojo against the rapidly growing South Korean manufacturer seems to have no confirmation: The big event has ended and consumers remain with the device, which, by the way, has no official battery life data, no price, etc., just the proposed April launch.

Also, the reviews seem to be respectful instead of breathless about the Galaxy S4. That’s why Apple’s shares are up today, as analyst reviews began to surface:

“While the S4 is likely to be the iPhone’s biggest competitor this year at the high end of the market, we remain confident in our iPhone estimate for this year of 177.5 million, which includes a cheaper phone in the September quarter,” wrote Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray.

“We believe the S4 will certainly sell well and it is incrementally negative for Apple,” Misek said. “However, the device is not revolutionary, in our view.”

There’s nothing wrong with iterative updates. It’s silly to re design every single year.

Where the S4 becomes a complete joke is the marketing lead up to the launch. “The next big thing” nonsense. The little kid approving the item in a box. Samsung was basically selling the public that this device would jump way ahead of everyone else … Reality is it pretty much keeps them parallel to the rest.

But there’s nothing wrong with the phone (by Samsung standards) … It’s just the absurd promise in the marketing that was not delivered.

Yeah. Samsung hyped this big time, from trying to take over Times Square and then filling up Radio City Music Hall. Their marketing budget is second to none.

Actually refreshing the OS…….. iOS has become so plain and dull over the years. I understand Apple’s if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it mentality but enough is enough already. Its been the same since 2007, they don’t need to go to the extreme’s like Android has, but at least give people more control over how they want to there phone to look. Allow people to have live wall paper if they want to, or to align the apps where they want them to be. App’s always tend to stick to an imaginary grid. Add widgets!!! Now again, they don’t need to go to the degree like Android does, but at least make a few useful widgets like email, sports, music, toggles etc. Put a quick settings widget in the notification tray, change up the lock screen or give people options to change if they want to, while keeping the old one as well. There is nothing wrong with the iPhone itself, its premium, sleek and fast. Its just the same old stale OS that needs a change. That’s what’s left to do…..

A lot of those ideas would drain on the battery. I don’t understand this need to rearrange apps. I’ve been using iPhones for four years and have never said I need to rearrange the apps in a way that I currently can’t.
As I said to someone else on here, look at OS X … Nearly ten years and there’s very little difference between the original release and mountain lion. Change for the sake of Change is not a good thing.
You also have to remember that 90% of iPhone users could careless about customizing their phone … So if you we’re to cater to the 10% you risk upsetting the 90%. And don’t kid yourself … The 90% hate change.

Those who didn’t jailbreak their iPhone does not mean they don’t want to customize their iPhone. There are so many reasons why they didn’t jailbreak their iPhone.

As I said earlier 90% of the iPhone users don’t care about these kind of things. There’s no sense in trying to satisfy 10% of cliental at the expense of angering some or all of the 90%

I doubt we’d even have cut-n-past, Siri, etc. The “masses” would of considered it “bloat” with “too many options”. Most would be satisfied without those features. Keep it all the same, and don’t add anything. lol

It’s not that iOS needs fixing, or drastic changes to the UI. It just needs feature updates to make peoples lives easier. How can say, BT sharing for ex. (an option, which can be toggled on or off) ruin the iOS experience for others? That makes no sense. As I recall, it took forever for Apple to ad the simple ‘cut-n-paste’. Geez.

There have been plenty of additions. Push notifications, notification centre, iCloud, Siri, multitasking, customizable wallpapers, personal hotspots, do not disturb, FaceTime, location based reminders etc. it’s been gradual but there have been lots of additions.
What all you complainers forget is that a lot of the time there’s hardware limitations. Eg. when the iPhone 3G was updated with iOS 4 it became very slow as it could not handle the additional options even though it was a limited iOS 4.
Additionally in this business you never give the customer everything they want all at once or there’ll never be a reason for repeat business. As we can see Samsung is also following this practice with the S4. There’s nothing wrong with that — it’s just business.

The complaints are mostly due to features that should of already been there, and Apple taking way too much time to implement. Again, the simple ‘cut-n-past’ feature as an example, took way too long, and should of been there from the start. Most of these features have absolutely nothing to do with hardware limitations, and people are forced to JB just to get them. The fact that Apple is constantly closing JB’s, just makes it worse.

FragilityG4

Many features have to do with hardware limitations — GPS, processor speed, ram etc.
“people are forced to JB just to get them” it is believed that 7% of all iPhones are jailbroken — I don’t think Apple is losing sleep over that argument.
I personally am happy with the OS and its features. Yes Cut and Paste took too long but at the end of the day I’m using a stronger OS. I don’t have to sit here and worry about malware attacks like Android. I don’t have to sit here and worry if my OS will be supported next release like Android. My 3GS was supported for the three years I had it.
To be completely honest the jailbreaking community doesn’t offer me much to consider doing it. Quick toggle for settings? How often does one need to go in settings? A way to get free apps? Well I’m not even going to touch on that one.
I also find it curious that whenever Apple releases an update the first thing the jailbreaking community asks “when will there be a jailbreak so I can update?” I would think that if the jailbreak is so good you never would have to worry about an Apple update … I guess it must be the security updates you’re after — the very ones you complain about.

Meant not limited by hardware, as in will run in older iPhones without issue. If it were up to the masses (your beloved 93%), there would be no Siri, no notification center, heck no WIFI hotspot, and some other features you take for granted. As far as feature set, there would be no forward evolution. But by the looks of it, you’d be completely happy with that.

That’s just it, and although subtle, they are changes. Most would of been opposed to initially because it adds “bloat” or could care less, but now upon using them, probably can’t live without them. JB tweaks aren’t limited to settings (direct BT/WIFI transfers between iOS devices for ex.). Some have already been implemented into iOS, and hopefully others will be in future updates. To keep everything as-is and not add anything else is just ridiculas. I’m not talking about drastic changes to the simplistic ‘look and feel’ of iOS. I can care less about useless widgets and themes.

If CEO Tim Cook is smart (which I am sure he is), Apple should release 3 iPhones this year:
– 4″ iPhone 5S
– 5″ iPhone 5S
– 4.5″ lower-priced iPhone 5S

Why? When Jobs came back the first thing he did was cut the line. Why? Less is more.

Only Samsung believes in cannibalizing itself with devices for every situation, screen size and possible buyer. These plans can only work for so long.

Samsung is just good at copying anyway, there’s nothing new for them to copy, so there’s nothing new in their phone. The only thing they could copy was the marketing; apparently they didn’t understand what “the next big thing” really imply.

You guys must be expecting the next iPhone to cook your meals. Samsung made improvements to their flagship phone. Apple might have less improvement in their next flagship phone. As a matter of fact, Apple didn’t ‘wow’ anyone with their 4, 4S, 5, IPad 4 and iPad mini.

Gary

No expectations on what to expect next from Apple. But when Samsung rags on Apple’s iterative updates, then pulls off one of its own with the S 4, it can be seen as hypocritical. Let alone the massive hype they cooked up for their unveil, which was cringe-worthy and difficult to watch.

Aside from that, the S 4 is a nice phone with nice specs, but other than that those new features are being called out as ‘fluff’ by many.

But that’s marketing. Hype is coverage and that’s exactly what Samsung wanted.

Apple (along with many other companies out there) has cooked up hype in the past and left many disappointed.

Nonetheless, it is “the next big thing” in the eyes of Samsung as the S4 is their flagship phone.

Agreed. All the hypes came from those analysts and their “reliable sources”. This is EXACTLY what I’m talking about. Everybody from the outside is putting up all these phantom products and its following expectations, which imprints all them inaccurate “facts” into the general public’s brain. So when companies doesn’t deliver what they thought was “supposed” to be included, everyone goes crazy and starts talking shit to the companies, thus market shares goes down, and everybody loses money.

G4, I’m glad there’s you in this blog site. Always good to know there’s still people out there with a clear mind =)

Typical Corporate racism. The black actress had no individual lines in any of the skits. Simply a
token prop. I notice these things as my nieces and nephew are mixed and I listen to how they express how they see the world. I’m now in the market for four new phones as my current contract ended in mid-January 2013. I was hotly awaiting the launch of the new Samsun S4. But after this marketing debacle. I’ll be spending my money somewhere else. Companies need to recognize that people of all races and colors are potential customers. Fancy gimmicks and gadgets should never replace respect and dignity when any company is marketing its products. Samsung, you do not deserve any respect nor admiration for your deplorable actions.
