‘iPhone 6’ Said to Have 4.8-Inch Display, 802.11ac Wi-Fi Says Analyst

Apple has “internally locked down” the iPhone 6 design with a 4.8-inch display, a notable increase in size compared to the iPhone 5s, analyst Timothy Arcuri of Cowen and Company claims (via AppleInsider). His note issued to investors on Wednesday adds another tweak to the already-circulating rumours of a bigger-screen iPhone.

After checking his internal sources within Apple’s supply chain, he concluded that the next-generation iPhone will sport a 4.8-inch display and feature 802.11ac, or Gigabit, Wi-Fi connectivity, which will allow users to enjoy speeds up to three times faster than the ones currently available on 802.11n wireless networks.

Earlier rumours indicated that Apple may work on two iPhone models: one with a 4.7-inch display and another one with a 5.7-inch display. The analyst doesn’t mention two iPhone sizes, so it will be interesting to see which one will be the company’s “lower cost” device. Will it discontinue the iPhone 5c or not?

Alongside a design upgrade, the iPhone 6 will also come with ‘”key software innovations,” which involve iBeacon, Touch ID, and Passbook, as part of Apple’s effort to enter the world of mobile payments, the analyst claims.

Aside from hardware tweaks and design changes, Arcuri also said that Apple is planning “key software innovations” with the next major release of its iOS platform. He expects the company will leverage iBeacon, Touch ID and Passbook as part of a push into new services with mobile payments.

His sources indicate that the next-generation Apple handset will arrive sometime in September, although they don’t exclude the possibility of an earlier summer launch.

We all know that “low cost” and Apple don’t go together.

That is true. We are all patiently waiting for the Dell Inspiron Smartphone.

While I expect Apple to spec up the wifi as technology evolves, I’ve never used my phone and wished that the wifi was faster. In that respect, it’s a moot selling point.

A 4.7″ screen that still only supports 4 icons horizontally? Or will they make a screen size similar to that of the S4?
