‘iPhone 6’ Said to Launch in Two Larger Sizes This September

Apple’s next-generation iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 6, will arrive as soon as September, sources speaking with the Japanese newspaper Nikkei reveal. The sources corroborate earlier rumours of two new iPhone models, which will likely come in 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch sizes.

Manufacturers have apparently begun making such components as fingerprint sensors and chips for liquid-crystal drivers.

Mass production of LCD panels will start as early as the April-June quarter at Sharp’s Kameyama factory, Japan Display’s Mobara plant, and at other facilities, according to sources. LG Electronics will supply panels as well. The new handset’s display resolution is expected to be significantly higher than that of current models.

Digitimes reported today that Apple has already placed orders for the iPhone 6 batteries with two of its suppliers, and that a third supplier order is pending.

The screen sizes Nikkei’s sources mention are in line with previous rumours, although there were whispers about a 5.7-inch size. Now, it only remains to be seen what strategy Apple will deploy: will the model with the 5.5-inch display feature the highly anticipated Sapphire glass? Recent sapphire glass patents reveal that Apple is ready to apply such improvement to its handsets.
