Tim Cook: Apple is Closer Than Ever to Releasing New Products

For the naysayers, Apple’s second fiscal quarter of 2014 was a shakeup: the company isn’t in decline, and this is the message Tim Cook transmits to all in an interview with the Wall Street Journal.

Fact is, analysts have been impressed by the quarterly earnings announced yesterday, as Apple’s stock price is up 7.78%, and the majority of Wall Street analysts have rated the stock as a strong buy.

Tim Cook also knows that all eyes are on Apple: while letting slip that Apple is hard at work on new products, he also adds that the company won’t rush things, because it wants to get it right.

You want to take the time to get it right. Our objective has never been to be first. It’s to be the best. To do things really well, it takes time. You can see a lot of products that have been brought to market where the thinking isn’t really deep and, as a consequence, these things don’t do very well. We don’t do very many things so we spend a lot of time on every detail and that part of Apple isn’t changing. It’s the way we’ve operated for years and it’s the way we still operate. I feel great about what we’ve got coming. Really great and it’s closer than it’s ever been.

As he suggested, new products aren’t just hardware. Now, considering the recent rumours of Apple interviewing high-profile payments industry experts, this obviously raises the question of whether it will be mobile payments. Tim Cook doesn’t deny that’s an interesting area, especially now that the iTunes Store has about 800 million active accounts.

I think it’s a really interesting area. We have almost 800 million iTunes accounts and the majority of those have credit cards behind them. We already have people using Touch ID to buy things across our store, so it’s an area of interest to us. And it’s an area where nobody has figured it out yet. I realize that there are some companies playing in it, but you still have a wallet in your back pocket and I do too which probably means it hasn’t been figured out just yet.

“It’s closer than its ever been…”, oh look now a few seconds have gone by it’s even closer! oh, now its even closer closer! lol. What an obvious statement. By definition you can’t be closer than time permits Cook.

Unless you have a setback to re-evaluate/redesign certain components within a project… which I’m sure they’ve done plenty of times. In other words, if they do tests on an antenna and discover it isn’t function as designed, then they could be set back a couple of months. So, what he means is, this is the closest to completion that they’ve gotten on the new products they’ve been working on.

Enlighten us… Tell use specifically when something like that has EVER happened? And don’t say “All the time”. Tell us exactly, specifically, and WITH PROOF, when one or two CLEARLY minor features were ALL that was introduced with a new iPhone. Go on you fucking genius… Enlighten us.

I think what he he means is it is the same tired design and the same situation of Apple telling people what they want. Locked down boring crap from Apple.

How Is it “tired”? What would you do to liven it up? Add disco lights?

“Locked down”. Yes… Yes it is. Thank you very much. Android is nice and wide open and just loves to gobble up malware and let it breed.

Of course they’ll be running to buy it. Being stuck with a tiny ass 4″ screen for years is like having a small penis, when your fellow android friends are hung like an elephant.

Ummmm…. Do you not understand the concept of over-compensating to make up for a lack of something?

I ‘get’ Apple’s traditional preference of not letting any info out on future products, I really do. And it might have flown in the past when its only competition was Microsoft – but with multiple competitors putting out worthy products in a variety of configurations almost monthly, in fields that have gone from cutting edge tech to a commodity (witness RBC’s latest – giving away an iPad with each new bank account, or the $40 Chromecast dongle), the company desperately needs to tell its fans, would-be fans and detractors what exactly it will be putting out and when. The rough edges can be worked out between now and release. If Apple sticks with its old promotional model, regardless of how ‘insanely great’ (or not) its next products might be, those same folks may just choose to not wait around and see.
‘Close’, I am reminded, is only applicable to the game of horseshoes. Its no way to describe technology.
