Samsung and LG Allegedly Interested in Adopting Sapphire Glass

Both Samsung and LG are interested in using sapphire glass, the Korean ET News reports (via GforGames). The two companies have recently contacted sapphire glass manufacturers to request samples, despite reviewing the material last year.

As we previously reported, with current manufacturing technology the final price of a sapphire glass display reaches about $30, but the Apple–GT Advanced collaboration was conceived to push down those costs.

This year however, the aforementioned Korean tech giants might be forced by the industry to reconsider their decision. With numerous other gadget manufacturers putting a lot of thought into making sapphire glass feasible, and with Apple already operating the sapphire glass processing plant in US, Arizona, LG and Samsung are supposedly going to jump on the sapphire display bandwagon sooner rather than later.

According to analyst Matt Margolis, the cost of a sapphire glass display for a 4.7-inch iPhone could hardly be above $11, while in the case of a 5.5-inch display this could go up to $15.

Sapphire is said to be one key selling feature of the iPhone 6, but it would also be a key element of the iWatch, given to its scratch-resistant nature.
