Montreal Metro Stations Turn On LTE Networks from Rogers, Telus, Bell and Videotron

The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced a stretch of the Montreal metro now has 4G LTE wireless connectivity from Rogers, Telus, Bell and Videotron.

The green line located downtown between the Guy-Concordia and Saint-Laurent stations is the first of five phases completed, part of a $50 million investment shared amongst all four carriers, with plans to complete coverage in 5-7 years.

The next phase will see wireless installations between Beaudry and Guy-Concordia stations on the green line and between Mont-Royal and Namur on the orange line, with Berri-UQAM, the busiest station of all, to go live by the end of this year. Busy commuters surfing the web on smartphones during commutes means lots of dollars are at stake.

The STM announced the partnership last fall, after Chicago’s Extenet could not bring the Big 3 and Videotron on board and ditched plans in 2012. Once Extenet vacated the picture, the Big 3 and Videotron formed their own agreement to install a wireless network in the metro.

It’s been unofficially working for the last two months. Berri Uqam has had 3G service for at least two or three years.

It seems odd to me that the entire roll out is slated to take so long. This is a budget constraint not a logistical one.

Why once again do I have a feeling smartphone robberies will go up in the Metro stations?
