Teksavvy CEO: Shaw Wants to Increase Prices for Smaller ISPs by 88%

Shaw recently increased Internet prices for its customers across the board, and now it appears to be targeting independent Internet Service Providers (ISP) that resell network traffic, such as Teksavvy.

Marc Gaudrault, Teksavvy’s CEO, posted on DSL Reports two days ago the following, sharing the massive price hike Shaw is proposing for independents–an increase of nearly 88%. The proposed prices have yet to be approved by the CRTC:

According to OpenMedia’s campaigns manager Josh Tabish, he had the following to say:

“Canadians should be outraged that Shaw is trying to abuse their power to crank up Internet prices across the board…

…Canadians are already paying some of the highest prices in the industrialized world for service, and speeds have fallen far behind our global counterparts. And this at a time when Shaw’s customers just faced a 10% price hike – after the company reported record profits in the last quarter.”

Tabish went on to say the fear is Rogers, TELUS and Bell would follow suit in line with Shaw and raise Internet prices for customers, as illustrated in the organization’s image below titled “The Big Telecom Price-Gouging Cycle”:

Back in 2011, Teksavvy was in the thick of things involving the CRTC’s decision on Internet user-based billing, which was eventually overturned by the Federal government.

Anyone using Teksavvy for Internet right now?

Scumbags. Canada is so flipping backwards sometimes, especially when it comes to ISP/Cell Carriers

From what I gathered Shaw was always lower then the other three, this might be an adjustment. But then again they often make deals with the big three to stay out of areas so their is less competition.

I’m with Teksavvy and they’re great! I hope the Big Three Idiots (and Shaw) don’t force them to raise rates … But it might be a futile hope.

they were great…but immediately after I signed up they started raising rates….even more than Robbers did.
what we need is a Consumers Union which will issue a Decree that on particular date ALL of consumers have to cancel their subscriptions to ANYTHING. and the see who is the last one to laugh.
btw, Zimbabwe has a faster internet than Canada

What I get with Teksavvy I would have to pay double what I’m paying for now from Rogers. A consumers Union is a pipe dream … You’re asking people to effectively pause their lives and possibly lose their jobs to make a statement.

I am not sure where everyone has been over the last few years. But every year Telus, Shaw, Bell, Rogers etc do rate increases. This is standard across the board at least once a year for all. Shaw started this year in Jan the others will follow suite like they do every year. If not happy with the cost lower your plan and usage then not affected by the increases. I like Shaw cause of the Go Wifi, free service calls, all their support is in Canada and not outsourced. Least gas prices are going down 🙂

I’ve been with TekSavvy for over a year and couldn’t be happier. I pay so much less than all my friends. I’ve even had a Telus salesman leave my door with his head down when he couldn’t come anywhere close to my TekSavvy price. This is a bummer though if their rates go up as I am using the cable (via Shaw’s infrastructure), not DSL.

I was using Telus and was paying $25 plus tax for 2 years on 25Mbps until I moved. TekSavvy’s price couldn’t come close to that. *shake head*

I’ve been with Teksavvy for years. Since the day DSL was available to me, actually. And I refer 2 to 3 people every month to them. Never had a problem, and rates have gone down over the years!

You have been with Teksavvy for years which mean your home is running Shaw/Rogers pipe as internet for years.
Teksavvy doesn’t run its own network whatsoever. I am glad you are referring friends using Shaw/Rogers network.
