Apple Job Ad Sparks Speculation Over Search Engine Ambitions

A job listing has prompted Cult of Mac to speculate about Apple’s possible future plans. The iPhone maker is currently in need of an engineering project manager for something called Apple Search.

According to the job ad, the engineer Apple hires will manage back-end operations for a search platform supporting hundreds of millions of users and “play a part in revolutionizing how people use their computers and mobile devices.”

If you are expecting Apple to launch its own Google Search-like search engine, well, you have to stand in line, as there are others in front of you. One of them is Gene Munster, who has been saying this for five years now. Yes, he is the same guy from the Apple TV unit that never materialized.

What seems like a challenge, though, is the App Store in its current shape. The lack of app discoverability increases the number of “zombie apps” every day as the App Store grows.

Cult of Mac does point to Apple’s previous hires in the search area: William Stasior — an Amazon and AltaVista veteran — joined the company in late 2012. Let’s hope that Apple is indeed busy improving the discoverability of the App Store and not just looking to launch its own web search engine.
